IS 200 1997 Press Release for Europe
6 March 1998
NEW ERA FOR LEXUS IN EUROPE
* Compact sports saloon joins Lexus range
* Designed for the European market
* Powerful six-cylinder 2.0 litre engine with variable valve timing (VVT-i) for high performance
* Choice of six speed manual or four speed auto gearbox
* Advanced suspension gives superb handling and ride comfort
Lexus is set to challenge established European brands in the compact luxury saloon market with the launch of its brand new Lexus IS200.
The new compact sports saloon has been designed specifically for the European market and will join the new Lexus GS300 and ultimate luxury saloon, the LS400.
The IS200 retains those essential Lexus characteristics of superb build quality and commitment to excellence which are a hallmark of the brand. In line with established Lexus policy, it combines both full equipment specification with superb performance.
The launch of the Lexus IS200 demonstrates Lexus' commitment to Europe and its intention to compete head-to-head with the luxury establishment.
The shape of the IS200 is strong and dynamic setting it apart from its competitors, while dynamic front and rear styling ensures it will never pass unnoticed. Despite its compact exterior size, the Lexus has class leading interior space.
The IS200 is rear wheel drive, with power delivered from a 2-litre, six-cylinder in-line engine which is refined and quiet in the best Lexus tradition. Sophisticated technology, including variable valve timing, ensures smooth power and torque at all engine speeds.
Drivers have a choice of a six speed manual gearbox or an advanced four speed automatic with intelligent computer control.
The advanced independent suspension system offers the best possible balance of handling and smooth ride comfort. The front and rear suspension use a strong and positive double wishbone.
The Lexus IS200 rides on 17-inch wheels with large disc brakes and precise steering to ensure maximum driver control and enjoyment.
Traction control is standard for maximum control under all driving conditions, while the latest passive safety systems ensure the new Lexus comfortably exceeds all official crash and safety tests.
The new Lexus IS200 is scheduled to go on sale in the European market in the first half of 1999.
