It's very disconcerting when that happens. It starts silent in electric mode, then the gas engine wakes up to a Big Jolt. Is this normal? But after it's warmed up and during normal driving you can still feel the jolt but to a far lesser extent.

My passengers tend to freak out when the engine kicks on. they think its a huge kick but I think I got used to it. If you think the shake is more than normal check out your engine mounts. As they get old they dry and crack so they adsorb less engine vibrations.
