2013 450h maintenance and oil change
I bought it used a few months ago. Got my first oil change at the dealership. Wondering if there are cheaper places?
The maintenance required sign came up and I believe that has to do with oil change. For my Camry, I went above the typical mileage suggested and did fine (had read that in consumer reports).
Not looking for what is 'prescribed' by Lexus necessarily but typically followed by those not necessarily loaded
Also got maintenance done at 35k. When would be the next one?
Nearly at 40k miles and in VA. Any guidance for a new owner appreciated.

Welcome to CL. I, too, am a new Lexus owner. Just got my 2010 RXh about 5 weeks ago. Since I do all my own diagnostics and maintenance, all I can recommend is to talk to friends, relatives, neighbors, co-workers, fellow church members, etc. to locate a trusted and reputable local mechanic to do the work, especially if they are a reputable 3rd party who specializes in Toyota's/Lexus. At that point, you just have to make sure you keep all your record and follow the Lexus Maintenance Schedule which should be delineated in your owner's manual.

Welcome, The oil only needs to be changed every 10,000 miles. You can take it anywhere for an oil change, just keep records. Lexus left the maintenance reminder light on the old 5,000 mile schedule to get you to visit the dealer more often to spend money there on stuff like rotating your tires and other potentially more expensive stuff they may make up that you may not need while you chow down on free donuts in the waiting room. So, check when the oil was last changed on your new to you vehicle.
You can reset the maintenance reminder light yourself. Just do a search on this forum. Where in VA are you located?

I never go in a say I want the 10,000, 30,000 or 50,000 mile service. Every 10,000 miles ask for an oil change and tire rotation at the Lexus/Toyota dealership. This should be less than $80. Every 30,000 miles the brake fluid needs to be changed and about $100. Every 20,000 miles change the air and cabin filters. This combined takes five minutes and the air filter can be bought on line at Lexus Parts World for $18. The cabin air filter can be bought at Walmart for $18, It is the Fram Fresh Breeze #10285 with carbon and baking soda to filter the air. Wiper blade inserts again can be bought at Lexus Parts World for $20 for both refills and takes five minutes to replace. You are done until 100,000 miles. At Lexus Parts World use cl5 in the promo code for 10% discount. If you go in an ask for the 10,000, 20,000 30,000 maintenance you will be paying big bucks for a lot more items you do not need checked and inspected. Once a year replace the key fob battery cr2032. Keep receipts for everything. I take my oil filter bought at Lexus Parts World and 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 purchased at Walmart for $24 to my local Toyota dealer and they charge me $15 labor for the oil and $20 for the tire rotation.

I guess what I'm wondering is........... if you take out the oil filter mechanism, WHILE you have the full amount of oil in the pan (because, as you suggested, we are just changing the oil filter), does that make more oil spill out than just 0.4 quarts?
this may actually be a not so intelligent question, I know. But I've never had an instance where I took off just the filter. I always popped the drain plug first and then proceeded to change the oil filter.

I've never had to put back more than 1/2 quart after removing my oil filter. As long as the engine rests, most of the oil will be back in the oil pan.
I'm only doing this because I bought Purolator filters on clearance (17 of them at $1 each ). They're not rated for super long intervals so 5k miles is about as long as I would go. If I didn't have the Purolator, I would have bought synthetic filter like the Fram Ultra (these are VERY well built, unlike other Frams) and change them out every 10k along with the engine oil.

Synthetic oils last so much longer before breaking down, but that doesn't address the junk that gets into the oil. I asked a Service Adviser about changing only the filter, and he looked at me like I was an idiot

every 5K miles = change oil filter
every 10k miles = change oil and oil filter, rotate tires
every 15K miles = change engine air filter and cabin air filter, replace smart key battery
every 30k miles = drain and fill transaxle fluid front only, replace break fluid, tighten all nuts and bolts on the chassis (hard lesson learned a while ago - once one of the parts gets loose, you don't know which part is making that dreaded squeaking noise)
every 60K miles = drain and fill rear transaxle fluid
at 100K miles and at every 50K miles afterwords = replace coolant, perform 12 volt battery test and replace if necessary
every 120K miles = replace spark plugs, replace shocks and struts, replace PCV valve, clean throttle body, clean MAF sensor, and IACV
at 150K miles and at every 50K miles afterwords = replace inverter coolant, check valve cover gasket for leaks and replace, if necessary
then, just ad hoc stuff like brake pads......
QUESTION:
my maintenance schedule this:at 60K miles:
❏ Replace rear differential oil (AWD with towing package only)
❏ Replace transmission fluid (AWD with towing package only
What is the oil for rear differential. Is there special Toyota gear oil for this?

Definitely DIY if you are handy. Super easy on our cars, all you need is a filter wrench and basic tools. I get my filters from Amazon and buy a few at a time, usually 5 packs. Then I just pickup Mobile1 0W20 at the local Walmart or where ever has it on sale when needed.

5pk for $24.20.
If you buy the 10pk it's even less.
Amazon doesn't list the '10-'15 rx450h in the fitment guide, but I guarantee you 100% it's the same filter that Lexus/Toyota uses and the ones I use.

The rebate below expires in a few days, 10/31/16 but provides $12 rebate for 5 qts. I submitted for 10 qts and received $24 about 9 weeks later.

Check your owners manual, as I think the AWD Hybrid rear differential is actually a second motor that takes Toyota WS ATF.
