Default BMW hybrids

GS450h or BMW 330e?

And now that has arrived a 530e or similar may not be far away.

Default Hybrid

Maybe not, but they seem way ahead in Hybrid development.

PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) ≠ Parallel (Gas + Electric) Hybrid.

I'm not a fan of plug in hybrids at all, because what happens when you run out of electric juice? Your car is basically carrying around extra weight for no reason, decreasing your overall efficiency.

Whereas in a parallel hybrid (i.e. GS450h).. the battery is constantly being recharged by the engine & regenerative braking, so the battery never just "drains out completely" .. while it's being recharged, the stored battery power is used to assist in acceleration (in additional to things like powering your AC).

PHEV's only makes sense to me if you're going a short distance, but if that were the case, why not go full electric?

As tejanp stated, the 3 series isn't in the same class as the GS. If a 530e were to get introduced, it wouldn't be able to match the GS450h in terms of performance or mpg, since there would be added weight. If I were to consider BMW cars, I would actually prefer a 330d (diesel) over the 330e (electric).

My two cents,

In a bit of a rush, but in that article I read 30 mpg somewhere.. for a 4 cylinder hybrid.. that's pretty mediocre, no? Pretty sure people on this forum have averaged better than that on their 450H's. I myself average around 33 mpg or so. That's with a lot of local driving, stuck in traffic driving and some freeway driving.

The price tag is pretty hefty on the 330e as well. I too would prefer the 330d over the 330e lol.

Yeah. No on the BMW 330. Just no. Putzing around the marina or golf course district...maybe the strand in SanDog. Not even the same ballpark as a 450h.
