Dealer Wants $2200 for Brake Actuator
My car is making a dying seal noise when I push hard on the brakes (even at a stop). Basically if I push the brakes really hard up and down it makes a squealing noise.
I called the dealership, they said it could be the brake actuator which is $1600 + labor. But that they recommend flushing the fluid first. I took it to my local mechanic and they said the brake fluid has less than 1% moisture and it isn't required to flush the fluid (fluid was last changed about 2 years ago in Feb of 2011). The independent mechanic said don't waste your $ with the brake flush and just get the actuator changed.
What do you think is a reasonable cost to replace the actuator? Is it a DIY project? If not, does anyone know any reasonable mechanics in Southern California who can do this?
I was also contemplating getting a warranty for the car since this repair is $2000! Any advice? It's a 2007 RX400h with 83,xxx miles. Thanks in advance

Apparently any job involving bleeding the air from the brake fluid is not a DIY job for this hybrid, because you need the Lexus computer to command the electronics in the brake system to bleed it properly. Is the squealing sound something that happens with normal braking, or only hard pushes on the pedal?

Too bad we dont have part number, the brake actuator is hard to find in the parts lists. The computer cost around $1600, but the actuator assembly is only around $162....

There is a TSIB #BR003-7 Regarding brake noise. The recommendation is to bleed the ABS Actuator, which requires a special tool. (Not Flushing the fluid as the dealer recommended- that doesn't make sense.). If this doesn't solve the problem, they then recommend changing the actuator. This had to be done on my 06. No reason a Toyota dealer could not do it and probably at a lesser cost than the Lexus dealer

My 2010 RX450 just had the ABS Actuator assembly replaced under warranty. They listed part 896051N and 44050-48320 but no price since under warranty. I couldn't locate those numbers at Sewell.

its what toyota/lexus uses to bleed the brake fluid
of course they have a licensed version
this is great i have used it many time on many different vehicles
so a diy is possible i dont know exactly how but this helps ( I hope)

the also has a "passive security system" which is default to off i also turned that on and its very nice
you can control everything in the car for example afs, windows, radio, nav, trunk, beeps, move the afs headlight, record car data, reset check engine, diagnose airbags, and many more its very help full, program new keys, re-flash ecu, program tpms sensor
IMO it's a very good investment
