Mileage on long trip
I just came back from a 1400 mile trip and my 2006 lexus rx hybrid got 22 mpg , I was going 70mpr most of the time.My question is does this seem right or should I reset like everyone on the forum says. What have other members got. Thanks Jimbo

The hybrid system does not come into play on the highway. At that point in time you are nothing more than a heavy RX330 with all the battery weight. Still, that is low, IMO. I do much better in a stock RX330 in similar circumstances.

That's just not correct, it does come into play in all modes. On the highway it will never be electric only (unless coasting) but will still supply additional power to increase mileage. At 70 mph and below it's most effective, above that it does fall sharply as it would in any car. Mine is rated at 28mpg hwy and I usually get about 30-31.

Also, wonder if your RX450h hybrid system behaves the same as in the RX400h in this regard?
Think we both agree though that 22MPG for the OP is low as I can easily get 26-28MPG on my trips in an RX330.

22 mpg does seem low, but at 70 mph you're not getting the best fuel economy. At 60 mph you will get much better mpg. On my '07 RX400h, At 55 mph I have gotten 32 mpg on a tank, at 60 mph I get 28-30 mpg, and at 70-75 I get about 26-27 mpg. Of course the outside temperature and how much you use the A/C or heater will affect mpg. You will get the best economy with the climate control OFF; using the heater makes the engine run more in city driving, and the A/C reduces economy as well.
There are many other factors, such as your tire pressure, low rolling resistance tires, hilly terrain, maintenance of your vehicle, etc.

As always, depends on how you drive, terrain, temperature etc -- not just average speed. Keep an eye on the usage screen and you can use it to adjust your driving to improve MPG.
You'll probably see less of an effect if you're focusing on keeping a constant speed. Small changes to the gas pedal can have quite an impact but the hybrid system definitely functions even at highway speed. That said, it doesn't have as much of an impact at highway speeds.
It's flat here in Houston as well and that really doesn't seem to matter. Hybrid system works on flat and hilly terrain (just got back from driving around in the Central Texas Hill Country).

I have both 400h and 450h (recent addition). My 400h gets around 23/24 (low) while the 450h gets around 30/31 (excellent). I rate the 450h excellent because my old tsx 2.4 i4 only gets like 24-26 combined.
I drive about 75% highway and 25% local. Very impress with the 450h. I'm also already on snow tires on the 450h, while the 400h is on high performance tires. I hope to get better mpg when I switch back to regular tires in the spring

Well just got back from a 1300 miles trip across two states. Soon as I filled up in Nevada (better gas) car was cruisin at 75 mph and I averaged 26.8 miles per gallon. Best I have ever experienced. Went from Sacramento across the pass to nevada on interstate 80 and ended up in Burley Idaho (40 miles east of Twin Falls). Car was loaded with luggage and my wife and self. What a great mileage...Gas price was average of $3.71 per gallon until we got back to California where it is $4.79 this is in a RX400h 2008

I drove to NC this past weekend and set the cruise at 85mph.Maintained that speed for 350 miles. AVG MPG was 22.3. If I keep it bellow 70 it will do 25-27. Battery defiantly comes into play, especially when you nail to pass a truck! I can avg 30+ keeping it under 60 and using some hyper milling techniques.

At various times highway driving, (also non-highway driving), it will show the motor running the car, (arrow from engine to wheels), and then the electric will kick in for maybe only a few seconds, or maybe for 10-20 seconds, showing arrow from the battery to wheels. So many time both arrows will show, meaning power from engine and the battery both is moving the car.
On a trip just this past week from seattle to chicago, pulling a small u-haul trailer (950 lb. trailer + maybe 300-400 lbs. of furniture), I averaged 18.09 mpg. measured manually using gallons consumed, and mileage driven. (interestingly, the car computer shows 19.1 or 19.2 mpg average) This was over some 9 or 10 tanks of gas, all non-ethanol fuel. Most of the highway miles through Montana/Wyoming at 75 mph, other states 65 mph.
Will post the next mileage results on the way home next week.
