The value of my 2010 RX450h...how has it held up for the past 2 years?
Hi everyone -
It's been a long time since I last posted on here, although I've been keeping up with reading the interesting and informative posts of my fellow RX 450h owners. To recap, I purchased my 2010 Rx450h in August of 2010 from a Lexus dealer, which has the starfire pearl exterior and parchment interior. I bought mine CPO (new tires, brakes, 161 pt inspection, etc., although I save $1,000 by declining the CPO warranty) with 23,500 miles on it. Now, just short of two years later, it has 43,000 miles. I was curious to see what cars similar to mine are selling for today, so I checked a few sources.
First, in my opinion, KBB, Edmunds, Truecar, etc., are helpful tools, but I don't put too much trust in them insofar as the real-life sales price of cars. I have never been able to sell my cars privately at the BB price (always got lower), trade my cars in for the BB price (always got lower), nor been able to buy a used car at BB price (always paid higher). Instead, I find that Carmax prices give me a much more realistic and accurate value. Carmax is not rock bottom prices, but they also don't give you inflated numbers from which the dealer works down from. And they're very in tune with real-life selling prices. Anyway, checking Carmax today, I found that they have only 13 RX450h for sale nationwide. The cheapest one listed is a white one (like mine), FWD (like mine), has 43k miles (like mine), and is located in the same region of the mid-south as where I'm from. It's selling for $42,100, which is about $1,300 MORE than what I paid for mine after driving the car for almost 2 years and putting on 20,000 miles. Incredible. From there, the prices go up to $46,000.
I then checked autotrader. I did a nationwide search for 2010 model years with less than 45,000 miles. I came up with 184 cars. I looked at the 10 cheapest cars, and the average price of those cars was around $40,000. Again, that's the average price for the cheapest ones....it doesn't account for the 174 cars that are listed at substantially higher prices.
Does it mean that I can sell my car today for more than what I paid for it 2 years ago? Maybe, maybe not. But it sure makes me feel like my wife and I have been driving a Lexus for pretty much free for 2 years.

That was good research and reporting.
Thanks
BTW, two weeks ago my dealers used car manager sent letters to everyone that bought a 2010 RX 450h saying he had high demand and no inventory. He just wanted a chance to bid or help trade one in for new. Not bad.

No, I don't play soccer!
So are you going to bite, Jim
I agree Lexus definitely holds their value. Same with Toyota too. A friend received a check equal to about 70% of what she paid for her Camry after it was totaled by a fossil. Her car was seven years old. I would also add they age gracefully.

Not now, I've bonded with 'Watson'. Did I tell you his mileage since fill up and a trip to Milledgeville is a tack under 32mpg ??? Still delivering .
I keep looking at the CT for even better mileage but can't see giving up what I have in size and luxury and power and features the CT doesn't yet have.

My sister came over yesterday and she rolled in her new CT200h Sport limited edition in white/black, nice little car. She drives mostly freeway at 50-60 mph and she says it is currently at 48 mpg, what the heck? She said when she does nicely in 50 mph it goes OVER 50 mpg.

We must drive about the same way in similar conditions. Mine is just the FWD but you're nearly as good
That is impressive. I get about 29.5 mpg (70/30 hiway/city) or about 30.5 mpg (50/50 city/hiway) in an AWD. That is so good comparing to her Daisy (RX350) with about 19.2 mpg average now.

Oil analysis
With my third change of oil at 30k, I decided to get an oil analysis. I didn't get around to it though till just over 37500 and sent it in last week. It appears the oil is holding up pretty well and so is the engine. But they have a baseline on me now (and one for themselves as they've not done this engine in the (h) configuration yet). I'll do it again midway into next change.

That's not a relevant question. The object is to see how the oil holds up in a particular engine in given conditions and period of use. The tests are run on how the oil changed 'from fresh oil'.

I am sorry did not see the universal averages to the far right of the chart early. Here is the baseline for the oil. You have to know your known elements level before you start looking for an increase in the elements from your old oil, then you could know from other sample later on in the life of your engine if you are having a wear problem or anything else going on with your engine. We know that the oil should be good for 10K miles or Toyota would have not used 10K miles for an oil change in all their new cars. I would think that the oil is good for 15K miles but I will never go there in my cars.
