iPhone 4S and 2008 400h
According to the Lexus manual, only one contact at a time can be transferred from phone to the phonebook in car? And I have to enter every name and number individually! Gave up after 3 contacts. Is it the iPhone 4S OS or the car's bluetooth compatibility? Have anybody experienced this issue?

It isn't that the iphone is years ahead in technology. It is just that Lexus did not include bluetooth Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP). The standard wasn't officially adopted until 2010 but it was been around since at least 2006

Kind of what I was getting at. Automotive technology of this type is always lagging behind the devices themselves. Mainly because it is impractical for companies such as Toyota/Lexus to support a wide variety of features until there are some standards such as the one you mention. Heck, there is still not even a real standard on connectors for MP3 players such as the iPod. Apple has their proprietary 30-pin while others use mini-USB, micro-USB or other such ports.

So anybody who has an iPhone 4S will have to enter the contact one at a time in a 2008 RX? Man, what a drag!
Will upgrade to the latest version of the Navi help? I think it is 11.1 or something... What about older iPhones? Do they have the same issue?

So, as it mentions in the manual -- one contact at a time is all that is possible no matter the phone.

Not sure how the new 3rd Generation vehicles are at handling the new phones and features.
BTW, would it not be just as well to pair your phone with the bluetooth in your vehicle to use the speakers but to allow the voice commands on your iPhone 4S to do the dialing for you? Why the need to transfer your contacts to the car?

That's what I've been doing but if you notice that with an incoming call it will only show number intead of name on navi screen, and for safety it is not a good idea to check the phone's caller ID. Anyway, big thanks to you guys out there to ensure that there is no other way to transfer contacts from cellphone.

Gen III handles most smart phone transfers fine. I have a droid and it wasn't a problem transferring everything over. And I love my 450h , Almost 3 yerars and 37000 miles and it's running as good as my 03 RX300 was. Only lots more power, mileage, and techno wizardry.
To answer the question, it is the limited capabilities of the system in your RX and it cannot be overcome by a NAV update. Those update just the maps and a few odds and ends and cannot update needed changes to hardware to make the system work in a different manner.

But you had to transfer on contact at a time which sucks when you have hundreds of contacts. Unfortunately the only choice for auto contact pulling is on the Gen IV models.

They all transferred at once. Well it took a few seconds but certainly not one at a time. I have the Gen III 2010. The Gen IV are not out for a few more years.

There is a way around - you can send all your contacts to the car's phonebook, but... you cannot do it directly from iPhone. I did transfer all my 450+ contacts like that:
Exported all contacts from iPhone 4 to Nokia 6210 Navigator and then all atonce to the car.
