To buy or not to buy, this is my question: Reality of transmission/inverter problem?
Re. a privetly-owned 2007 RX 400h with less than 50K miles. I know this is a bit overdone on the site, but here goes--My concern is the reliability of the transmission/inverter, which seems to be a significant problem with these vehicles. The operative word is "seems."
My question is: What is the current thinking/knowledge about whether this is REALLY a common problem, and whether one would be well-advised to just walk away from the hybrids and go with a plain old RX 350 (RX 350 owners--just an attempt at some humor).
Knowing what you now know, would you buy another RX 400h? I respect the honesty of opinions of Lexus owners, so updates on this matter will be appreciated.

the transmission is covered up 70k miles. I have the hybrid and love it. The gas mileage and the acceleration when you need it. Had 1 transmission problem and it was leaking...the dealership saw it and fixed it under warranty and its not a cpo vehicle.

the transmisson problems are blown way out of proportion on this forum, if you take good care of your vehicle and have the routine maintenance at the recommended intervals, the transmission will take you as long as you want it to, at less than 50 K just make sure that they had it serviced, the transmission is controlled entirely by a computer and you should get 200k with basic maintenance with no problems

^ This and hybrid system warranty is 96 months/100K. As stated above, get an extended warranty if you're worried about the other stuff that is covered by the extended warranty.
Absolutely. However, you need to perform your own due diligence and make your own decision based on your own needs/wants/priorities/etc. There's no monolithic "current thinking". Each person differs otherwise everyone would have the hybrid or no one would.

I would definitely buy another 2007 400h. Had mine 2 years (bought it in 2010 with 24k miles), and have had no problems. I have only done oil and air filter changes. How much is the seller asking for the 07 with 50k miles? If it has no accidents and it's around $25-30k, that would be a good deal.
There is no transmission problem that I've heard of, just a current recall on the inverter intelligent power module of some serial numbers. A few people have had issues with the A/C condenser blowing out white dust, that is not covered past the warranty (no TSB).

in several states, CA and FL i know, the warranty is 10yr/150,000 miles. same car just different state regulations. from everything i read researched the 400h we just bought, if you have a failure after the 100k you can get them to cover it if still under 150k. just have a relaitionship already with the lexus dealer so they know you and from what i rad, you;ll be charged $500 (and not $3000+) for labor basically.
plus, it's a lexus. look around where you drive. there are RX's everywhere for a reason. they don't fail

My 400 has had a new trans installed. I think there are 2 others who have had the coolant leak. I also had the white dust on the dash and got a new AC condenser. Close to $10k in extended warranty fixes for both of those. I would buy another hybrid if I had to replace this one. It is a great car.

Mine is over 110,000 miles with all stock parts so I don't think there will be any problems. Still getting the same mpg as when I first got it new. I think as long as you take good care of it then it will run great for a long time.

Besides mine being bought used, had I had the money when it was new, I would have bought it. Great vehicle and love it. Also like the way my dealer takes care of me and my car when in for service.
