Default GS450h leaked - same hp but a lot better mpg

Lexus GS450h much cleaner

AMSTERDAM - The newly developed power train for the GS450h sedan, the farm-fresh a lot cleaner and more economical than its predecessor. The manufacturer claims a CO2 emissions below 145 g / km. The current model comes to 180 g / km.

The corresponding average consumption rate is at 6.3 l/100 km, almost 1.5 l/100 km less than the current type of outlet. Lexus speaks of eenvolledig newly developed drivetrain. Lexus once again opts for a V6 engine, the new GS is combined with two electric motors and a nickel metal hydride battery pack. The total output of the powertrain is 343 hp. This value is almost equal (345 hp) the ability of the existing type. The GS 450h accelerates from a standstill in the same time to 100 km / h as its predecessor, namely 5.9 seconds. The top is 250 km / h Lexus offers the driver a choice of three driving modes. Besides an Eco mode, a sport or sport + mode, with the emphasis on sporty driving performance right away. Anyway, the GS of an electronically controlled variable damping system and active electronic control of the rear (driven) wheels to the saloon to give a dynamic drive character.

I guess Toyota did the same across the board. Don't focus on HP, but better MPG. They did this with the Camry as well, 2011, has less MPG than the new 2012 remodel.

Rather disappointing that both engines are pretty much carry-overs. Better MPG is great and important, but what for pushing the envelope?

Yeah this is not going to be replacing V8s.

According to this the fuel economy is bumped to 6.3l/100km or 37.3 MPG with 343HP. Current GS450h has 340 HP and gets 22/25. If I'm reading that right, it's a huge jump.

The BMW 550i in comparison has 400HP and rings in at 15/22.
The 535i has 300HP and gets 19/28.

This slots somewhere in between a V6 and V8. Much better fuel economy than both the V6 and V8 competition, more power than the V6 competitors but not as much as the V8 engines.

I know that a lot of people here focus on the hp numbers, and that it makes for good advertising campaigns, but the overwhelming majority of people don't drive "sporty".

For the average buyer, the new GS450h will be more than competant in the performance department.

Well the camry mpg shot up but the horsepower also rose by 13.

Lexus Germany website says current GS has 340 horsepower at 179 or 180 CO g/km depending on model. Economy is rated at 7.1/9.3/7.7 L/100km.

Combined 7.7 l/100km translates to 30.5 mpg.
If the new combined is 6.3, then that is 37.3 mpg

That is a 23% improvement.

On the EPA scale, the current GS gets 22/25/23.
So in theory, we can expect the new combined to be 28mpg

Not good enough. It needs at least 30mpg to offset the 50 lost hp over a V8. As is the 450h will be a compelling alternative to a V6 but I don't see it competing with the 550i and E550.

engine and tech is significantly better than before though, it is not an carry over, they used atkison cycle this time around and then D4S to bring the power back - 40+ hp more than RX450h setup. And over 30% improved EPA mpg, metioned in US PR by Lexus.

^^ according to the PR, it loses 2 horsepower and gets .4 second slower 0-60 time? A little bit of a step back

impressive fuel economy. the 3gs450h is already seriously fast and as long as they have better trunk space this time, i think this is a winner, but numbers are likely to still be pretty small.

it's 5.5 0-60? well the post says 0-100kph which is 62mph, so that might explain the diff.

On the bottom of the PR, it says 0-60 in 5.6 seconds. On the Lexus website for the current GS, it says 0-60 in 5.2
