Attached below in PDF format is a step by step DIY oil change for 2006-2008 Lexus RX 400h.

The only thing I have a question on is the size of SST (Special Service Tool) 09228-07501 in step 3a. The SST is 64mm x 14 flute oil filter socket. You can buy one at any auto parts store for ~$5.
Once I get the OEM (Original Equipment Mfg) filter off I will be using a PureOne filter which uses a 76mm x 14 flute oil filter socket (Torque: 18 N·m or 13 ft·lbf).

K&N HP-1002
Mobil 1 Model M1102
Purolator L10241 or PureOne PL10241
Bosch 3330.


As for Oil I am going to use Mobil 1 0W-20 Advanced Fuel Economy if I can find it?

0w20 is good. I use it in the winter. I plan to use it all year. However, I had a couple of jugs of 5w30 sitting in my garage, so I've been using 0w20 in the winter and 5w30 in the summer.

Torque - can't say I've ever torqued the filter or the drain bolt, and I highly doubt the guy at the dealership does it either...lol. However, if the filter is torqued on correctly, you should be able to remove it by hand anyway.

I've been using the Toyota filter (I like that the o-ring comes pre-lubed) but my most recent oil change (last week) I used a FRAM Xtended Guard which is THE ONLY Fram I would recommend (this one is well built, the other models...not so much).

It appears from my research on the internet that Toyota oil filters are made by Denso.

Seen it...it's from 1999 with an update in 2008 I think. Fram didn't even make an Xtended Guard back then (and again, I'll state that only the Xtended Guard is a decent filter by Fram).

Yes, Denso still makes Toyota filters, but I'd bet a good portion of those other filters are now being sourced by some other company. Case in point..(although it's not in that study) Honda filters used to be made by Filtech. Only the factory installed filters are Filtech now, the ones from the dealership are made by FRAM.

I found Mobile 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy at Walmart this weekend for $24.50 in 5 qt jug.

Does Lexus use full synthetic with dealer oil changes or just the regular oil?

0W-20 is the spec oil for the 2008 RX400h, and the dealer uses it, and it is always synthetic because that is all that is available in 0W-20.

Why don't you just go to the Toyota / Lexus dealer and buy 5 litres of the Toyota 0w20? It's good stuff.

Just an update. The OEM (Original Equipment Mfg) oil filter (Toyota part # 90915-YZZG1) uses a 64/65mm 14 flute oil filter socket. I picked one up at Pepboys for $5.

The Purolator L10241 or PureOne PL10241 oil filters use a 76mm 14 flute oil filter socket. which they have a pep boys also. It just so happens to be the same size oil filter wrench used on late model Mercedes Benz.

As for buying Toyota oil form the dealer; the reason Is I do not live close to a dealer and I don't feel like paying there marked up prices.

Same here. I get a 5 qt jug of Mobil 1 for 24.50 at Wal Mart and my filters i bought a case of OEM YZZG1 for a few dollars a piece off Ebay.

Yes, the cars stay prestine. I took my Florida car to Connecticut for one winter and it was amazing how fast it rusted.


BTW: I tried this electric oil extractor and it worked awesome! It makes the job so easy and clean.

The spec oil for my 2008 is 0W-20. Might want to note in your write-up Brian.

Any one know the part number for the gasket?
Ebay yielded Toyota part# 9043012031 , Rock auto DORMAN Part # 095143

I haven't replaced mine in a while and thought I should.
