Default Roof Strength Test- Marginal?

Hey,

I just picked up my loaded GSh yesterday and did some reading online about my new car.

I checked out the IIHS website and was pleased to find that the GS was the best pick for 2006 (frontal), Good for the side-impact test and Acceptable for the roof strength test. Reading the sub-text, I found that the score (for the roof strength test) did not apply to the GS Hybrid and that the Hybrid was a Marginal in that category.

I'm sure that the car will still do fine in the event of a roll-over, but was wondering why the Hybrid would fare worse than the standard GSes. Is it due to the extra weight of the battery? I didn't imagine the battery would be that heavy- I found that acceleration cornering between the GS460 and my GSh was just about the same (although, to be fair, my h has the Active Power Stabilizer Suspension System -APSSS- option and the 460 I tested did not).

Link

Cheers.

well based on the website's description, it's based on a strength-to-weight ratio. in order for a GSh to have acceptable rating like the regular GS, you would need to strengthen the roof. because all GS (including hybrid) share the same roof frame/structure, of course the GSh will fail this test due to the extra weight of the hybrid powertrain/battery.

It has to be noted that the structural rigidity of Lexus cars is not great in general when compared to BMW or Mercedes. You notice a lot more chassis flex when driving aggressively, tossing the car into corners, and riding rough roads.

you don't even need to drive aggressively.

just go over a speed bump diagonally, and you might hear the A-pillar snap.

Doesn't worry me. I totaled a 2GS and me and 3 other people walked out with hardly a scratch. One of the reasons I bought a 3GS, I am confident they build very safe vehicles.

Lexus vehicles are extremely safe and fare well in crash tests and we have hardly seen any significant safety issues.
