whats your mpg on RX450h?

Admittedly this is a bit off topic, but in college I had a car that had a broken fuel gauge. It always showed the tank as being half full, so I had to eye ball when to fill up with gas. I was not very good at estimating the fuel level, since my car broke down twice due to being out of gas. Coincidentally, the car broke down at the exact same spot both times. You'd think I'd learn from my past bad experiences, yet I still let it run dry before fueling up.

Just a 400h, but it is over a year old, and the MPG has improved. Once the year break in was past, the fuel economy improved dramatically. I was seeing great highway and even better city. We do litres per 100 km here, and we were able to do 9.3 l/100k on a mountain trip this summer. A 2 l/100 km improvement over our prairie adventures over the previous year.

After 5 months of ownership, mine is still fluctuating quite a bit, with mixed city/hwy driving (all with Shell 93 Octane/10% Ethanol), about 75% of this in Eco mode. I guess I can't complain about an overall average ~28, but I'm really trying to accelerate "smartly" and was hoping for a bit more.

sleepysurf, I'm not sure what your mileage is but I noticed a difference after the 5k mark. I'm sure the warm weather contributed to it. Now that it's getting colder by me, time will tell if it still holds true.

1. Do you guys go up hills much?
2. Let's say the battery is almost fully charged, how long does it take you do drain the battery down?
I have yet to fully charge the battery...not sure if it is even possible. The most I got to was to the tip of the battery terminals but it still showed very little black.

I go up and down hills during my city commute. The ride in the morning is more downhill so I gain a little, conversely lose it on the way back. I usually keep the display on MPG. I'm not sure what's happening with the battery charge. I'll have to check it.

I dont know if you guys have any experience driving on highway 5 from san francisco to los angeles (probably not though), but I was driving a rented Prius down there on the 500 mile trek. Well obviously because of the long highway miles, the battery slowly went down and down into the purple range with just 1 bar. However, right when you get to los angeles, you first go really up hill and then its down hill for miles. I remember the prius being pretty fully charge when we got there.

With all rechargable battery, it takes more energy to charge the last 20% then the first 80%, so it is very hard to see it fully charged.
And in a Prius, if you drive over 90mph, your mpg goes below 17.

That's right and precisely why Toyota's exhaust gas recirculation will be going into more than just hybrid vehicles. However, where you really suffer is taking short trips in winter in the hybrid. By the time the engine heats up you may already be halfway to your destination vs. driving 25, 30, etc. miles with a warm engine that will be more inclined to shutting off when not needed. Supposedly the 450h is much better with the EGR technology, I'd love to compare it against a 400h and I would hope that we will see this tech. go into the GS and LS hybrids.
But even at its worst 25-26 MPG, it beats the X5's 17-18 MPG no matter how carefully I drove, and that was the goal.

My low mileage 2010 FWD 450h hits 30MPG overall (+/- .2). This is pretty much the EPA rating for the vehicle. I drive in urban / suburban areas in Northern California. I have an unhurried driving style that is a good match to a hybrid. On a recent trip I averaged 34.2. My brother is a Prius driver that gets well into the 60 MPG range. I am considering trying a few of his strategies to see if they will work on the RX.

I've had my 2011 450 FWD for about 3 weeks now and have been very pleased with the mpg. No interstate and would have to say on my 17 miles one way to work 6 of it is city with another 5 in a 2 lane country road the rest is 4 lane. I'm hitting 33-34 on each fill up. Still warm but cooling off. We have no winter gas here in Alabama so expect to see very little drop this winter. I do the speed limit but don't have a lead foot. This is my 4th hybrid so I'm familiar with what works. I'm impressed with this vehicle and it's technology.
