First tank
Bought CPO car last week. First tank was 19.3 mpg. 60 miles round trip to work. 60% highway (but stop and go) and 40% city with traffic. I do nothing different than my current car which I kept. (Rx300 2001 with251k miles) and that thing gets between 18.3 to 18.8mpg. Something is not right.

The reason I'm asking about tires is because my tires were going bald and my last, 90% freeway trip got me 25mpg, which was shocking.

I use 91 Chevron gas. AWD. I have these Milestar tires which were new when bought. It's not Michelin but I doubt that it's causing a 10 mpg difference from EPA tested numbers. Around 70 degrees or so my tire pressure is about 35 which is 2 psi above recommended.

Abysmally low MPGs
Our 2015 RX450h gets, on average, 24.3 MPG! Weather, tire pressure, gasoline grades, hwy. cruising, local driving---none of these variables matter. It simply does not give you the miles that Lexus claims! I'm beginning to think that they are related to VW! So, beware.

CPO - Certified Pre-Owned. Lexus has a bunch onfo on this but to summarize, it has the maintenance done up to date, body is quite clean and comes with 6 years of bumper to bumper warranty regardless of mileage since the first in-service date by the original owner (or 2 more years of warranty if the original warranty expired already)

On my old 2001 RX which is also an AWD, I drive pretty carefully and get about 18 to 18.5 mpg in mixed driving. but I easily go 80 mpg and do lots of quick stop and go's in city traffic. I can't live like this. this is some kind of a slow driving torture.

My second tank was 23.5 mpg. And, man, that was hard. I tried every trick in the book to save gas. Took off the cross bars on top to reduce drag, ran the tires at 35 psi (at 70 degrees) and A/C was off in the mornings. Also the windows were never rolled down while driving and I always tried not to go into the "power" band of the techometer. As a result, my commute went from 55 minutes in the morning to 1 hour and 5 minutes. Coming home, I didn't exceed 70 mph and accelerated super slow causing lot of disrespect from fellow lane cutting, hard braking and jerky accelerating drivers in Los Angeles. Yet, my battery does not fully charge. Even after extensive coasting and using brakes, it hit full charge only once.

I still think there something wrong with my battery as it doesn't go up all the way. Most of the time, I'm ranging about 5/8 to 3/8, at which point engine starts kicking in quite frequently. One more week of slow driving and getting yelled at by other drivers and then I'm going into the dealer armed with data.... I will post an update.

No, I don't play soccer!
MellonCOO, this thread is full of tips to help you increase your mileage. Try not to focus on the hybrid battery. The best I could ever get was one bar from the top after going down a long hill with some braking. The 450h does have regenerative braking to help boost the battery. And remember the AC is electric so that might explain why the gas engine is kicking in frequently. More often than not I found myself a few MPGs lower than the rating,no doubt due to my short commute with hills. It was still at least two digits higher than my 330 which IMO was a significant enough improvement for me to overlook. Plus there's other features to enjoy about the 450h. Good luck with improving the mileage.

Is the majority of your commute sitting in traffic or constant highway speed?

I am a retired engineer so knowing that modern cars automatically adjust for octane value, I decided to see how much loss of power and MPG I would get if I changed to 87 octane (regular) gas. I allowed the tank to approach empty before I refilled with Costco regular. My MPG dropped on this first tank but was back to what I was getting with 93 octane (Costco premium) by the second tank. No engine knocking, no loss of power or MPG.
When I calculate MPG I get about 1 MPG less than what the dash display shows. You can click on my signature Fuelly icon in my signature to see mpg details.

Took a trip down to Key West and got some decent mileage, I didn't realize it until after I filled up on the way back. i didn't start with a full tank.
I thought I was doing good 50miles into the tank. US1 North is mostly 45-55 single lane. There was some traffic here and there:
About 20 miles onto the turnpike doing 65-70mph, I was still doing pretty decently.
Still doing good on the turnpike with some traffic.
When it opened up I was doing 65-70mph following the flow of traffic as there was a lot of volume, I wasn't holding anyone up and I couldn't really speed if I wanted to. Not bad for an average over ~170miles. If I had fill up before the trip I probably would have had an similar average over close to 400miles. This was on regular gas, 3 adults, and AC on blast the whole way. My 2010 AWD with ~83k.

On our 2015 FWD RX450h I filled up with regular at my last fillip. My "since last fill up" mpg display after burning 1/2 tank is 28.8 mpg. Same MPG as I was getting with premium. There is No knocking, no noticeable loss of power and no MPG loss.
