I need to take a look at it first before I can make any kind of decision......but most likely not because I am not a big Hybrind fan at all........

Cost Cutting

Agree. The Camry hybrid engine is several years old already. I wish they had used the new 2.5L Toyota engine instead of the older 2.4L. Ford is using a newly designed 2.5L in their new Fusion hybrid and they went all out to update it from their older four.
I will definitely consider a hybrid for my next car, but have seen the HS250h at two separate auto shows and while I know that the car is supposed to be based on the European Avensis, it still screams Corolla every time I see it. If I were buying a new hybrid this year it would almost certainly be a Prius, for functionality, economy and uniqueness of style.

I haven't seen one up close yet, only pics. It doesn't look half bad. It does kind of look like a Camry. I wouldn't mind it as a daily driver/beater. But if I were to go hybrid, my first choice would be the new Prius or if I could afford it, the GS 400h.

that would be tough since there's no such thing as a GS 400h.

x2. It also kinda looks like the 1st gen Prius, just a little bit bigger.

This engine has been adapted for hybrid use by switching to the Atkinson cycle. Using the Camry powertrain saved a lot of development and certification cost.

over $40k? Maybe Toyota is trying to take Chevy Volt followers. I'm all for saving energy, but other than the price tag, getting 50 mpg in a car that doesn't look like the prius is a winner to me.

I think a smart move by Lexus corporate would be to make the loaner cars ES and HS models and ditch the IS for a while. Its dated and needs more power anyway

While I am generally sold on Subarus, I find the HS quite interesting. It's on my CAR CHAT review list (per CL member request) when it becomes available, but I also will evaluate it as a possible purchase as my own next car.

Camry Hybrid is Better!!
As a current Camry Hybrid and Lexus owner, I have been following the development of the HS250h for some time. And I have to say that Lexus has made a big mistake bringing this car into production!! Not only is the design horrible but for the money that Lexus put into developing this vehicle they could have easily created an IS-hybrid and an ES-hybrid!! I have been driving my Camry hybrid for about a year and I love everything about it!! If I had to replace my Camry hybrid today I would most definitely go with the RX450h!! The gas mileage is great (30mpg) and I love all of the new features including the heads-up display and the remote mouse controller!! I looked at an RX400h when I was going to buy my Camry hybrid and the main reason I didn't buy the RX400h was because of the gas mileage. I really think Lexus has dropped the ball with this vehicle and will see poor sales figures as a result.

How do you know the Camry is better than the HS? Have you driven or owned an HS yet? A little biased here aren't we?

Mike, I think you will like the HS a lot. Even down to the wood trim! Heck, even I like the wood trim in the HS.

After owning Lexus cars since 1989, this car does not deserve a Lexus badge. Its a gussed up corolla and a very lousy and ridiculous idea. This is a luxury brand and it cannot have such an ugly cheap looking car like this. This dilutes the lexus brand image. Can you all see why Lexus is losing sales in the US more and more each year compared to Audi, Mercedes, and BMW which are gaining market share in the USA? Its because Lexus are not updating their cars fast enough with newer options, engines and then come up with this cheap attempt to get more sales by selling the HS. I would not be caught dead in this car no it will ever be my LOANER car when I drop off my GS for servicing.
