Okay, I realize we're getting hosed because we're going to the Lexus dealership (and not the Toyota dealership), but how much are we getting hosed?

Just got the 30K service on our '11 HS. The 30K service alone was priced at $350. That's before parts & labor.

Seriously? Anybody else have a price on this one?

I'm over 50K now, so I don't recall exactly, but I think it was around $500 total. Yes, you're paying for the premium experience, free loaner cars, "greeter" when you pull up, private offices furnished with phone and computer to work, separate reading and TV rooms, etc. Heck, my 50K service which isn't much more than an oil change and tire rotation, was near $200, and wiper blade replacement was $40.

Can't wait for the big ticket items...

For me, the Lexus dealer is right on my way to work, so it's much more convenient than a Toyota dealer. But i think I will price out the difference when it comes time for a big one.

I hear BMW/Mercedes/Audi cost just as much to service, maybe more, especially considering the higher failure rates.

Thanks, Magellan. That actually makes me feel better; the total service for me was around $500, too. Good reminder, too, that it's the failure rate which really makes service expensive... honestly, our VW hasn't had a service under $500 in years (granted, it's 8 years old, but... yeah, something's always breaking -- and is always complicated to repair).

We go to the dealership for the same reason -- convenience. Love that they offer loaners, they're also on the way to work, etc. I guess I was wondering if we should consider changing dealers, if another dealer would be more competitive. Perhaps not. Anyone else?

I'm not minding the 'free' perks either.
Our dealer will come and fetch/deliver the car for us, great since the dealer is on the edge of town.

If you can change the oil yourself, you can surely replace the air conditiong filter in your glove box, and the engine air filter. They just pop in and out. All three of those items bought online with factory or better parts might cost about $100. The only other "big ticket item" is the replacement of the brake fluid.

And I wonder how many dealer shops actually do that job correctly. When they say "replace brake fluid", I would think that job includes sucking out all the old, replacing it with new, then bleeding the whole system at each wheel and brake caliper. I just wonder how many really do it.

If I did all that myself, and saved all the receipts, I'd save $400 bucks, but I need help to bleed the brakes because that's a two person job.

Actually, you can do it yourself with a tool such as the Mityvac (MITMV6835) Vacuum Brake Bleeding Kit. The kit costs around $150 on Amazon but you only have to buy it once and you can do every car you will ever own by yourself.
