Real world towing with the GX: Your Experiences: Pull any horse trailers?
Hi there,
I would love to replace my Tundra with a GX 460. However, my wife uses the Tundra every so often to pull her two horse trailer (that's why we got the truck in the first place). The loaded horse trailer is under the tow rating for the GX but she points out the wheelbase and the lower powered V8 as potential issues when towing.
The GX would be a much better every day vehicle compared to the truck, but the truck is a better tow vehicle. If the GX were "good enough" for towing it would work for us.
Any of you have real world experience towing with the GX?

The advantage of the GX vs Tundra is that AVS and will help level out the rear of the GX while the Tundra does not have this feature, but I think the Tundra has trailer sway control wheras the GX does not.
All in all, the Tundra which has a larger wheelbase, better geared rear end and a wider stance would more than likely be the better tow rig. What Tundra engine do you have?
FYI, the GX requires premium fuel wheras the Tundra does not.

What is the weight of the trailer? I don't think it will have a problem pulling a trailer as the 4.6 was developed for use in the GX, Sequoia, and Tundra. I think the size and dimensions might be more problematic as the Sequoia and Tundra are wider.

The trailer is 2600 pounds without horses.
Gross weight (with two horses) 4700.
Can we make it work?

I tow a 3500# camper trailer with a load distribution/sway control hitch. I installed a brake controller (GX is prewired), and the 6500# receiver. There is a receiver that has a lesser rating (research here on the forum). The load leveling suspension keeps the rig straight and level. Drives real nice in 4th gear.
What year is the Tundra? That should be good as well!

It's a 2011. It's a great tow vehicle. However it's not a great every day vehicle for the family. Most of the time it's not towing, so nobody wants to drive it around the city. It's clunky and parking is no fun. Plus, it doesn't have Mark Levinson sound system

Awesome. Thanks for all the good responses everybody. One thing - Are the suspension upgrades in the premium model - adaptive suspension with rear auto-leveling and CRAWL - a must-have for towing?

I put mine in sport mode while towing and it really helps controlling trailer sway.
The air suspension makes sure your always sitting nice and level.
Also make sure you get the oem hitch. The other bolt on one's from kurt and other aftermarket manufacturers are nowhere near as beefy and substantial as the oem unit.
