The Last GX 460
What model year will be the last for the GX 460 ... 2016, 2017 or later?
Our early-production (November 2009) base version 2010 GX 460 is the best vehicle we've owned ... smooth, quiet, but most of all reliable. We extended the warranty for 7 years or 75,000 miles, but it's not obvious what to do next. Range Rovers lack reliability, the current LX is too 'hippy' for my tastes and there's no reliable estimate of when the new LX will be available, much less whether it will look better.
Lacking a better alternative, we would likely buy another GX 460, but when? We're thinking at the end of our extended warranty in two years, but will the GX 460 be available then? We would not want the GX 460 product line to 'expire' before our extended warranty expires!

Would you not consider buying a used GX if it is no longer available as a new model?
I have intentions of buying another used GX in 5-8 years.
Why did you feel the need to buy an extended warranty? 75k miles is nothing to be concerned about here. Will the extended warranty cost pay off.

Our automotive requirements are a bit different than many (most?) as we have been a one-car family since 1996.
Not only does our only vehicle have to be "bullet-proof" but also the warranty and the dealership service. We are unwilling to own our only vehicle if it is not under a warranty, which means we are forced to trade before the standard warranty expires at four years. We made an exception in this case because the GX 460 is such a great vehicle and we purchased an extended warranty for seven years ... actually, it extends the original warranty for three more years. So, whether the extended warranty pays off* or not is immaterial ... it's a requirement for our only vehicle to be under warranty.
We're not committed to buying another GX although it may be the "lesser evil" before our extended warranty expires, but will the GX 460 be available? Will there be a 2017 model year GX 460 or will the 2016 be the last GX 460?

I do not understand! You have a GX 460 and it has been great and you will want to buy another one, but why are you so paranoid about an extended warranty. Seven Years, 75,000 miles is nothing for these vehicles. They are one of the most reliable vehicles Lexus builds. How many mechanical complaints do you see on this forum. I have had an SC, GS, LS and now a GX. They are all great cars. True, machines are man made and mechanical and electronic problems may occur. However, if they do, what are the chances that the cost of the fix will exceed what you paid for your extended warranty. Put the cost of the warranty into some type of investment and if you must use it you will have it and maybe a little interest and dividend. You are only paying for three years worth of insurance. Not the 7/75,000 which makes it seem a lot more. You are fully covered for 4 years/50,000. My wife and I have owned 26 Toyota and Lexus products since 1978. We have never had a mechanical or electrical problem on any of them. I take good care and do all preventative maintenance on my vehicles. I am now 73 and have a 2015 Lexus GX and will most likely replace it with another when the time suits me. House insurance and car insurance are the only insurances you truly need to purchase. There is and old saying that you can be "insurance poor". The dealer offered my an 8yr/125,000 mile plan. Cost: $3550. No way!!!

A 3rd Gen More Than Likely
These are just my thoughts on discussions I've seen so far:
Reviewing posts on T4R.org members are already discussing the 6th Gen 4Runner. One of the members is an engineer with Toyota, and frequently asks for comments gauging 4Runner owners on their likes/dislikes of the 4Runner for future product development. That being said, he has recently acknowledged that the 6th Gen 4Runner has already been designed. This makes sense since it can take 5-10 years of product lead time before a model is ever produced. Basically, by the time the mid-model redesign (i.e. 2014 for the GX) comes out manufacturers have already moved on to the next generation. Not everything goes to plan as desired so pinning down a year for an entire product re-design is not always easy. Since the 4runner and GX seem to follow the same product re-design time scale (7 years) my money is on a re-design for the 2017 model year.
However, this is also highly dependent on sales numbers. For example, the current Prius and Tacoma seemed to have a pretty popular look; hence, the extended time for re-design. Only now have they become long in the tooth; hence, the 2016 Tacoma re-design and possible 2017 Prius re-design.
I can't imagine the model being scrubbed. The president of Toyota has stated the the 4Runner is his baby and he would never eliminate it. Plus, the Land Cruiser Prado is so popular overseas I can't imagine it would not see a re-design. Therefore, I am reasonably sure a 3rd Gen GX will exist to carry us through the decade.

based on past models, very likely by 2018 new gx will be here, likely a turbo version of the 4L v6.
there is also rumors that the 2016 LX will be redesigned. Look to that model to see whats in store.
i dont understand if its bulletproof why you need to rush out and get a new one. Engine will easily go to 200-250K miles

I have 214K on my V8 4Runner. Last month a strut went which was the first non maintenance item to go. Your vehicle is bulletproof to 200K IMO.
That said, the ability to get real good pricing on the GX right now, is definitely an incentive to proceed. These vehicles really are a bargain at the generous discount to MSRP that they can be gotten for presently.
Lastly the 4runner is to remain unchanged for 2016 and to the extent that the GX utilizes the same platform one would think 2017 at the earliest, but that is far from clear that the platform will remain shared.

this was before the lockdown on internet sells on jerry by corporate
so at least the pricing they gave you wasn't over priced.
