The beta for iOS is going on. Has anyone here tried it yet?

I get my WiFi ELM327 adapter today, so I wanted to make sure the beta wouldn't make my GX spontaneously combust, or randomly change settings that I already like.

For folks with the android or IOS beta, what settings did you change, that you can't already change through the on-screen menus?

Hi,
The customizations in our iOS version are exactly the same as in our Android version - so we don't expect any spontaneous combustion

But yeah, please give it a try and let us know how it goes

Carista,

The app seems to list all the LPS settings. Most of them, we can already get at via the nav screen setup menus. On the 2014-2015 GX, there are about 10-11 settings are Dealer Only settings. I guess this is what we need this app for, correct?

It takes about 3 minutes for the software to read the Lexus settings, but then you can scroll through the settings and make changes quickly. The app seems to be working as it should.

Default I Like Carista!

I'm in the beta program and wanted to give some feedback here.

I bought the VGate iCar3 WiFi adapter to use with my iPhone 5s. Goes for about $35. The OBD2 port is right under the dash by the steering column. No access issue at all. Easily paired to my iPhone: I "forgot" my normal home wifi network and connected to the V-Link network the adapter broadcasts on the first try. Easy. This adapter is supposed to power itself down so you can leave it plugged in for an extended period without worrying about draining the car battery but I havent tried that yet.

Carista performs two main functions. I tried both checking for any diagnosic codes as well as checking/changing some customizable settings. First it takes several minutes with the adapter above to check diagnostics. The Carista app gives you a reasonable percentage complete indication so you know it's doing work. One strange thing I noticed was the nav displays a diagnostics screen you can't normally get to. I didn't play with those menus but want to explore them later. When the process is complete you can just easily exit out of those menus on the nav unit. Since I didn't have any check engine/dash lights on to start with I didnt do anything more with this function.

Second thing I did was get into the settings function in the Carista app. It took Carista with the VGate adapter about 2 minutes to gather all my settings before displaying them. I can confirm it did allow me to view and set both customer as well as dealer-only settings! In my case I turned off the seat belt ding sound which is normally a dealer-only option. Saving settings took just a couple seconds. My opinion is it's great to have all these options in one place, easily scrollable on your phone vs. the nav interface. And as an added bonus you can have the app email you your settings!

In short, Carista is well worth the $20 - I give it 4 stars! And I think everyone will want an OBD2 adapter if for no other reason than to just look up engine light codes that we all invariably experience at some point. In fact the check engine light on my my Gen 4 2005 4Runner had come on the day I decided to buy the adapter and give Carista a try so I'm getting immediate additional use.

Default Dongle problems

I picked up the dongle from Amazon (same as an earlier poster mentioned).

I was able to pair to my Android phone just fine, but the Carista app says that my OBD device is defective. While that could be a true statement (I did only pay $10), that error description is rather lacking.

Any more details about the failure that could be extracted would be helpful. Debug log, error codes, etc...

In the latest version of Carista, we added some logic to detect these bad devices that are flooding the market. So if the app shows you that message, that means it has detected that your device falls in that category, sorry. Outside appearance is not indicative of the quality of the device - we've seen lots of cases where 2 devices look the same, but one works and the other doesn't. If you're interested in finding out technical details of why we think your device is bad, please send us a debug report through the app and we'll be happy to forward you the log. Thanks.

Since the cheap version of the OBD2 reader was defective (might have just been the unit I purchased), it would be good to know what specific qualities I should look for in a replacement unit.

I'm thrilled with this! bought the app and the
iKKEGOL wifi dongle iKKEGOL wifi dongle
from Amazon. Worked like a charm on my 2011 GX460. I am thrilled to have the all-windows-down feature enabled on my fob now!

Thanks Carista folks.

Thanks for the reminder. I downloaded the app and ordered the same dongle.
I ordered an OBD2 splitter due to I installed a GPS tracker on my GX (personal use, not insurance company). Hopefully no conflicts between the two devices.

There are lots of fake Bluetooth ELM327 devices out there. In the US, we recommend the BAFX device that we link to here: http://www.caristaapp.com/hardware/?platform=android

Yup, we love Android too But actually, Apple was the one that shot themselves in the foot by disallowing standard Bluetooth data communication. That's the main reason why we went with Android first. Since then, WiFi OBD devices have appeared and their prices have gone down significantly, so now there's an option for those iOS users as well

I would recommend turning off any other OBD devices when you use Carista (or any other OBD app, really). The OBD2 protocol was designed with one "tester" device in mind, and if you have multiple ones, you will most likely get interference, especially from the point of view of the ELM327 devices that Carista uses. So yes, either turn off or entirely unplug your GPS tracker when you use Carista.
