Default Why can't I find any crash test ratings on the GX?

Is it because it isn't a top selling model?

Been looking for it for years, but they have not come out with any from the IIHS or other agencies.

With the recent findings with the Camry and ES, Toyota worries me a bit.

This pic looks really sad:

where is the objective data to support your claim?

they dont test a lot of the big suvs for whatever reason...sequoia lx gx to name a few

Also the 4runner has been tested and since its basically the same, why would they crash a gx?

4 runner doesn't have the rear second-row side airbag.

3rd row models have always had the side curtain airbags. Everything is pretty much the same - part of the star safety system

I was referring to the side air-bags, not the side curtain....

According to the Toyota and Lexus sites... 8 airbags in the 4runner vs 10 in the gx.......I guess it is still safe to assume crash tests would be similar since all else is the same.

Not crash test results, but interesting nonetheless:

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs...1-2010-001.pdf

Love the pictures of the GX modifications! Interesting that the test vehicle "did not have the reprogrammed control algorithm" and yet there were no test failures identified:

"The vehicle's ESC System appears to meet the performance and equipment requirements as required by FMVSS 126. In April 2010, Toyota began a recall campaign (NHTSA Campaign No. 10V159000) on the MY2010 Lexus GX460 vehicles to reprogram the ESC control algorithm. The test vehicle in this report did not have the reprogrammed control algorithm."

So, was the 2010 recall campaign to reprogram the control algorithm just 'marketing' as the unmodified vehicle passed the government's test?

The GX shares its platform with the 4Runner and FJ, both of which did well in crash tests. Toyota folks spoke about the weight gain with the 460 vs the 470 when it launched, how they beefed it up to do better in crash tests etc... and as mentioned it has more airbags than the FJ and 4runner.

Funny enough one reason why I didn't pick up a LR4, reliability aside, was lack of rear seat side airbags vs the GX. The LR4 does have 2nd row side curtain but the GX has both.

I think it's safe to infer it performs as well if not better than the 4Runner and FJ with NHTSA and IIHS. Historically, most luxury carmakers do not submit their cars to IIHS for testing though that's changed in the last few years with more luxury vehicles being tested every year. With respect to NHTSA, my guess Lexus demonstrated equivalency to the FJ and/or 4Runner to earn an approval for sale in the US. Similar thing happens in Med Devices (which I work in) with Class II/510K devices.

The interesting thing about the 4runner is that it did get a Top Safety PIck with "Good" on pretty much everything. The one interesting area is the roof strength test.

If you purchased a Runner after October 2012, Toyota changed something and it gave it a "good" rating. Before October 2012, it just got "average"....Wonder what they changed or is different or if it affects the GX 460:

thats great the 4runner did good in the Moderate overlap front test results. reassuring for our gx. i cant figure out why it took them that long to do that test?

They should probably up the speed ratings too. If you head on another vehicle and you both are doing 40mph, thats a 80mph crash basically speaking. Doubt they will ever do that since more than likely nothing can withstand that kind of a crash.

fyi, lexus did do crash tests on the GX in their own lab. I remember seeing a video from lexus when the gx460 first came out showing how they crash tested the gx. do a search on you tube for it.
