Lightbulb Crossbars

I've read some conflicting information about the roof system on the GX.

I have the factory cross bars but also own a Yakima cross bar system. I also have a Yakima Skybox 21.

I've seen some reviews saying the Lexus cross bars aren't recommended with cargo boxes. Is this true? I couldn't imagine why.

I am also wondering if my Yakima cross bars work on the GX. The rails are different then on my other cars and I haven't tried to put them on yet.

So, does anybody here use the Lexus cross bars or 3rd party cross bars with a cargo box?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Eric

Two more questions, does driving around with the cross bars on all the time effect MPG?

Do you hear any additional cabin noise with the cross bars on?

Thanks

I don't see how the box would be a problem unless you exceed the weight limit (176 lbs). They do not effect mileage and do not make noise. Make sure they are secured/mounted in their designated location.

I have the Lexus cross bars and a Yakima Rocketbox 15. I notice no noise or mileage impact on the bars, but some of both when the box is loaded. Most of the use of the box has been for longer trips from/to/around FL/MI/CO with no problems.

Since I normally pack the box with the bulky items, I estimate the weight in the box of approximately 75-100 pounds (probably less). With a 40 pound box, I am well within the limits of the bars. Simple physics would lead me to believe the box must impact the center of gravity, but I have not noticed it. Maybe others can comment on that?

I have the factory load bars with a Yakima Skybox 18. I loaded up the box with 3 suitcases, my fishing gear and a pack and play and headed to SW Colorado. I could hear the box on top of the roof, but not enough to annoy me. My gas mileage over the 2000+ mile trip was 17.9 per the on board computer.

Thanks for sharing the photos. I've been wondering if the factory bars allow enough clearance for the roof antenna. Looks like that is not a problem.

What happened to your running board?

My running boards are in the garage. We are a tall family and my fiancé asked if I could remove them. I'm trying to source the part that finishes the rocker panel. If I can't find it, I'll mount some rock sliders instead.

Default Nice tires!

Those tires you have on your GX look really nice. I'm going overlanding this summer and want to put something a little taller than stock on my GX. What specific size are yours and do you have any rubbing issues?

Default OEM Cross bars rattles

Team,

Do your cross bars rattle/shake? I have this "crazy" rattling noise and I think it comes from the OEM cross bars. When I shake it, yes it moves and makes lots of noises.

How do you fix it? Will wrapping tapes around the end of the bar to make it fit "tighter"? See pic.

Mine is tight and not moving. Did you check if the the screws were tighten correctly? Maybe uncrew them and reinstall again.

I have owned it for 3+ years but only drive it on weekend so I can barely hear the noise . Lately it becomes my DD and these noises drive me nut. I'll reinstall it this weekend...if it gets warmer.

I have used mine 3 or so times and prefer the clean look with them off so I only install them when needed.

Default Factory roof cross bars are too low for cargo carriers

The Thule Cargo Carrier that we have been using interchangeably with our GX470 and Honda Pilot does not fit the GX460. The cross bars on the GX460 are designed too low that the locking mechanism that grabs the cross bar is hitting the roof. What a big disappointment this is. To those who plans on buying OEM cross bars, I suggest you look for other alternatives if you plan to use cargo carriers.
