Default General Maintenance

Does anyone know what brand oil comes with the GX460 from the factory. I have sent an e-mail to Lexus and the reply was "Genuine Lexus Motor Oil".

Since Toyota is not in the refinery buisness, they source it from someone that is. I am told it is a Synthetic factory fill. My dealer in Houston uses Valvoline Synthetic as bulk oil.

It's Toyota oil that is made by Mobil 1. It's Mobil 1 0W20...

The Toyota/Lexus 0w-20 has a special additive package that is way different from any other 0w-20 on the market. It has a very high moly content. ExxonMobil (XOM) makes this oil specifically for Toyota.

Thanks all,
I have searched for VOA's (virgin oil analysis) on Valvoline Synpower 0-20. None come up. At this point, I don't feel comfortable using it even tho it may be good oil. Dealer quoted me $74.95 OTD for 8.2 qts. of oil and filter. Don't know what they will charge for Mobil 1.

I don't know what oil Toyota put in, but my was completely black at 5000 miles so I have changed it. I doubt it was a synthetic or anything premium. I have changed the oil myself and put a fully synthetic Mobile 1 0W-30. After 3000 miles is still nice and clear. Walmart had the best price on those 5qt jugs

The color of the oil means nothing!

There are two reasons why Toyota/Lexus is now recommending 0w-20. The main reason is for gas mileage and the other reason is they will soon have to offer maintenance like their competitors. After the complimentary oil change at 10K miles I will be using Amsoil 0w-30.

Let me tell you why. I have an IS350 and experienced the start-up cam controller noise. These cam controllers (VVTi) are the mechanical devices that actually vary the cam timing (just like the new GX V8). The engine's motor oil is the medium to actually vary the cams (four). I didn't have the noise until I started using the newly recommended 0w-20 motor oil (factory fill was 5w-30). As soon as I changed back to 0w-30 the noise went away. Apparently the pour rate is so low the controllers would drain and until they refilled (at start-up) you get a couple seconds of ratcheting noise.

I've no clue what it comes with, but I'm pretty sure it's 0-20 synthetic of some sort. I'll be going with Motul @ 20k.

Anyone have the part number for the cabin filter? I have checked, and mine does not have a part number anywhere on it. The engine filter it is a DENSO filter with part number.

I am just trying to get these items online at a reduced price other than the dealer.

Apparently, there are two different filters.

Cabin Air Filter - Particle $24.18 $14.75

Carbon Impregnated Cabin Air Filter (Deodorant Filter) $69.90 $42.64

The second price is Sewell's.

Koz, what's your reason for using 0w-30 instead of 0w-20?

amsoil spam oil, i have heard of horror stories with that stuff.

you can put different oil in your gx, but is it worth 60K when your engine goes bust and lexus denies it..

you can change oil yourself, but then you run into issues proving you did it to lexus also when your engine starts giving you problems

you people spend this much and then skimp out on proper oil changes, common...get it done at dealer for petes sake...

Bravo! Spending this much money on the vehicle and then trying to squeeze a few bucks on maintenance is false economy, especially when your warranty is at risk. What you pour in the crankcase is irrelevant ... knowing that Lexus will honor their warranty is the issue. Give your Lexus Service Department the responsibility for your vehicle and sleep well at night! ;-)

I have a HEAVY foot (high RPM alot) and I tow a trailer. I feel that Amsoil 0w-30 is the best oil on the market. It has produced the best UOAs out all the oils I have used.
