Default 4runner to GX

Worked with a dealer today to trade in a 2004 4runner SR5, V8, 78000 miles. Always concerns me when I am sitting at home hoping I got a good buy. do not want to pay less than anyone else but certainly do not want to pay more. The GX MSRP is just under $59000 with trade my final price is $42000 including everything but IL tax. What do you think? How do I find invoice on the vehicle? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You need to treat both transactions separately. Calculate what a good deal is for a GX with options (2010 you should be able to get at invoice; 2011 no more than $1500 over invoice). Then you need calculate how much your trade is worth. It maybe be better to sell private. The only benefit of trading to the dealer is that you don't pay tax on the difference and a small convenience. If you can get more $ by selling private (tax difference), I wouldn't trade.

If you are negotiating with a dealer first negotiate a deal on your GX (how much over invoice) and then negotiate the trade. When you have two offers you are happy with, the you are set. Make sure you know # so you can calculate everything quickly.

A great web site to check value of your trade and invoice price of GX with any components is www.edmunds.com

Last tip, make sure you price on the web site price with options you are getting. Options have a substantial markup. Dealer may give you the car at invoice and then all option will charge you MSRP. The web site will show you invoice on all components as well.

Read some buying tips on the web site. They have many tricks you can use like but the last day of the month, when you get the deal walk away (they will call you before you get home with something extra for free, etc...)

Good Luck!
