The headlights look like some somebody with droopy eyes wearing thick glasses.

I don't see HID headlights in the specs?

I thought the premium edition was going to have HID's?

Not that it will matter much to most, but the new one only seats 7. I have carried 8 in my GX several times and it is a major convenience. I'm not sure I'll upgrade to the new model when the time comes for a replacement.

My 2004 is getting pretty beat up so I'm looking to upgrade in the next year or so. I may wait until the 2011 model just to give Lexus time to shake out the details. I think I'll get used to the new look fairly quickly and the interior has some features that are missing on the '04. I think it's a decent upgrade and I kind of like the shorter height a bit more than the old version. The suspension upgrades are nice too. Mine is beginning to feel a tad "loose" compared to how it felt 6 years ago.

I don't see why not. The wheel well size is pretty similar to the previous generation.

The new look in person is a lot different from what you see in pics. Of course everyone judges the looks of cars by how they see it in pictures, but not in actual reality. The new GX is a pretty good looking SUV. The lines go really well and has gained a more muscular look.

  • New 4.6-Liter Engine and 301-hp V8 with Six Speed Transmission
  • New Standard Power Fold-Flat Third Row and 10 Airbags

TORRANCE, Calif. (Nov. 23, 2009) – Lexus today announced the manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP) for the all-new, second generation 2010 GX 460 luxury utility vehicle which will arrive at dealerships beginning in late December. For the first time, the GX will be offered in two grades, base, which will carry an MSRP of $51,970, and Premium which will be priced at $56,765. The MSRP does not include a delivery, processing and handling fee of $875. The all-new GX 460 will be on display for the first time in North America at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show in December.

The second generation GX 460 that is more powerful, more efficient and more luxurious will be powered with an all-new 4.6-liter V8 engine. The engine will produce 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of peak torque. It is teamed with an efficient six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift that helps
provide the best-in-class V8 fuel economy. Combined city/highway fuel economy is improved by 13 percent to an EPA-estimated 17 mpg. The GX 460 has an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city and 20 mpg.

In addition to the powerful engine, the GX 460 brings more versatile interior. The second row
seat slides 4.1 inches fore/aft to maximize passenger and cargo carrying ability. The foldable and reclining second row seats feature a 60/40 walk-in function to access the standard power fold-flat third row seats.
A new center console design offers the driver more storage and functionality.

Luxury is enhanced in the GX 460 with a quieter cabin, as well as new additional standard features and options. Heated and ventilated front seats, class leading 10 airbags, rear back-up camera (without Navigation), Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) and full-time four-wheel drive are all
standard on the GX 460. Safety features available include the Pre-Collision System, wide-view front and
side cameras, Lane Departure Alert and Intelligent High Beam. Among the new luxury options are semi-
aniline leather, a heated steering wheel and heated outer second-row seats.

The exterior of the GX 460 demonstrates new convenience and styling features such as the rear
glass hatch for easier access to the cargo area, integrated rear door handle and rear spoiler with
integrated wiper. The GX color palette is also revised and includes two all-new colors: Knight’s Armor

Lexus Enform™ with Safety Connect™ is an all-new telematics system available by subscription.
Lexus Safety Connect is standard on all GX 460, while Lexus Enform is only available with navigation-

included. The Lexus Enform and the Safety Connect response center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week – every day of the year.

tips and event information, as well as insights into exclusive owners' benefits. As part of the Lexus Enform

Twenty teams of Lexus specialists will hit the road on Jan. 13--the start of a month-long process to prep dealership personnel on how to create buzz for the redesigned 2010 GX 460 mid-sized SUV.

Though the GX has been on the market since September 2002, managers at Toyota Motor Corp.'s luxury division still believe retailers do not understand all of the vehicle's attributes. U.S. sales of the existing GX 470 fell 61 percent this year through October from a year earlier.

“A good part of our training is to teach the sales people how to relay the message,” said Charles Hubbard, a member of the Lexus College team.

The redesigned vehicle comes in two trim levels--base and premium. It goes on sale in late December, but most of the initial units will reach dealerships in January.

Key new features include a 4.6-liter, V-8 engine making 301 hp. That compares with the 4.7-liter V-8 delivering 263 hp on the GX 470. Torque on the 2010 model rises to 329 pounds-feet from 323 pounds-feet on the predecessor.

Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, the more-powerful new model also gets better fuel economy: 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway, compared with 14/18 for the 2009 model equipped with a five-speed automatic. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard, up from 17-inchers.

Inside, third-row seating is standard; the outgoing GX 470 has an optional third row. Cargo space in the new model shrinks by nearly 13 cubic feet, but legroom is up 4.4 inches in the third row. The transfer case is push-button compared with the current manual levers.

“We still think there is an audience that wants a more rugged vehicle,”
said Mark Templin, general manager of the Lexus Division. “We made it more rugged and more fuel efficient.”

Many other goodies

The Lexus College folks have their hands full. High on the list is the kinetic dynamic suspension system, an optional feature since 2003 but one that few dealers ordered. The system helps keep the vehicle stable and gives it a firmer feel for better handling. Lexus made it standard for the 2010 model.

“Most dealers didn't understand it and wouldn't buy it. That's why we made it standard,” Hubbard said. “If you don't have it, it's a world of difference. Without KDSS, the car is floaty. It leans when you go into curves. With KDSS, the vehicle is flat.”

Another big story, Hubbard said, is the third row seats that fold flat with the push of a button. Because of the GX 470's solid rear axle, the seats could not fold flat. The floor was elevated three inches to allow for the fold-flat function.

“This is big news,” Hubbard said. “People have asked for this for years.”

The back window flips open for the first time, allowing people to access the cargo area without having to open the back door.

Other new features include optional crawl control for off-road driving. Drivers can manually input the speed from 1 mph to 3.7 mph, and the computer will automatically control the brakes and accelerator, allowing the driver to concentrate on steering. The computer guides the GX 460 through mud and ruts.

There are optional front- and wide-view side cameras, which can be manually operated for speeds under 6 mph, which helps with parking and blind spots.

New for 2010 on the safety side are active front headrests. Ten airbags are standard.

Standard entertainment equipment includes a nine-speaker audio system with a six-disc CD changer, Bluetooth, XM radio and iPod connectivity. Optional equipment includes a 17-speaker system and a rear-seat entertainment system with two seat-back mounted screens.

“The GX470 was very popular for us,” Templin says. “The segment has declined dramatically. This is the product that will continue to bring out young, affluent families.”

The market

The 61 percent decline for the GX 470 through October brought total volume to 5,524 for the year, well below some competitors. The Acura MDX sold 24,814 units, down 38 percent. BMW X5 sales were down 23 percent to 20,787.

Templin expects sales of about 14,000 units for calendar year 2010. He said about 50 percent of the sales will come from existing Lexus customers. He said the base model at $52,845, a 9 percent price hike over the 2009 model, will be the best seller. The premium trim level, which wasn't offered for 2009, will list for $57,640. All prices include $875 for shipping.
