GX470 Exhaust Rattle - Heat Insulator $5 Repair DIY
My GX470 started to rattle like a POS. I believe it's a combination of the holes enlarging over time combined with potholes, that cause the shield to drop. The shield drops on top of the muffler and makes a horrible noise. The Insulator or shield sits above the center muffler between the muffler and the rear seat passenger floor boards. I believe it's there to prevent the rear seat floor from getting hot. This is pretty easy. It takes a little time for the penetrating oil to work and only costs approximately $5.

What you need / what I recommend:
- 4 - Stainless or Zink Fender Washers
- WD-40 or Penetrating Oil
- 10MM Box Wrench
- Vehicle Ramps & Wheel Chocks
What to do:
- Carefully Drive vehicle up ramps
- Set emergency brake
- Chock front wheels
- Remove front rubber exhaust hanger. Pull the top of the rubber hanger off and rotate the hanger down. This provides clearance to remove the heat insulator and access to nuts.
- * Optional: If u have any nuts still holding the shield - Apply Penetrating oil to any existing nuts that are still holding the heat shield and wait awhile.
- After removing any last bolts that are holding the shield, remove the shield by sliding it through the side of the muffler where you removed the hanger
- Apply Penetrating Oil to all 4 bolts. Wait awhile - I waited 1 hour
- Carefully remove all 4 bolts with the box end of a 10mm wrench
- Slide shield back on top of the muffler
- Replace each nut and fender washer - secure the shield back in place
- Reattach the rubber hanger from the muffler to the chassis
