I am getting a 04 GX470. It currently has Mich LTX M/S on it.

What tires to get for mild off road use? I'm planning on 265/70/17 size to get 1 in larger (or 1/2" taller ground clearance). I am in southern cal so not much snow.

Do I need E rating? Someone told me 10 ply on E is stronger than 6 ply C but it is 7-9 lb heavier each tire.

They told you the truth. I have the Duratracs in that size with the E rating and I notice the weight of them on the corners. I wish I had gone with C because I don't need the extra load carrying of E and don't wheel super hard in sharp rocks. If you're not doing any serious off road stuff and mostly highway, what's wrong with another set of Michelins? My father got 100,000 miles out of his on his tundra and there was still tread on them when he sold them.

E is overkill for mild offroading, those are good choices, also check out Falken Rocky Mountains and Cooper Discoverers

Based on the great reviews, I bought 5 Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure With Kevlar whiach are great on and off-road. Very pleased with them.

For mild off-roading you don't need anything more than those M/S's you already have. I've been through some pretty hairy trails in my old Grand Cherokee with worn Goodyear SRA's. An off-road equipped SUV like the GX does not need AT tires for mild off roading.

How mild is mild for you? Driving in the mountains east of Sacramento? Out in the desert at Joshua Tree?

I did a lot of research and ended up getting a BFG AT - C-load tires (265/70/17) They're lighter than D or E load and I haven't had any issues with them. I've gone on most trails in Anza Borrego, Mammoth and Death Valley.

But I am replacing them with 33" tires soon. PM me if you're interested in slightly used tires. They have 13K miles on them with lifetime hazard warranty (even off-roading). The spare tire is brand new. I'm located in Orange County.

Does 265/70/17 fit fine on stock wheels & suspension without any rubbing? Do you have any pictures? How's the road noise/comfort?

Hello. Curious about these tires. Would you post some initial impressions? How is noise. I've had 2 sets of Bridgestone Revo 2 on my last 4Runner before purchasing the GX and would be tempes to go back to the Revo (from Latitude Tour HP garbage on here now).
