Reasonable offer from carmax? 08 GX470
Hey Everyone,
Ah it has been a great ride with my GX I have owned since 2010 but its time to let her go.
I have a 2008 Blizzard Pearl GX470 at 101k miles.
Water pump and timing belt were done at 96k @ dealer.
The car has all the bells and whistles. Mark Levision/Nav/Rear Dvd/Trailer/etc
As far as damage goes.. Someone dinged the front passenger door + front bumper front paint seems to be wearing thin. I also got rear ended in the winter time and had my rear bumper replaced.
They offered me.................................
14k for the car and 17k if I have the rear seats which are in the attic.
I am just selling the car, not purchasing a new one.
Is there offer that unreasonable? Honestly, I am trading my car for a down payment of my new house. I'm sick of renting and unfortunately the GX is the first thing to go.
Whats your experience selling to the public? Is it worth the hassle or just I take the money and run? This would be my first "car" sale.
Appreciate it everyone!

it's a bit low but I was expecting far worse from carmax... have you checked the KBB on the car? it should be in the mid $19k on a dealer trade in...
when I was car shopping a few weeks ago, most '08s I found with ~80k miles were asking mid to high $24k... but those were with no accidents and service records were also up to date...
is their offer negotiable? even for them to fix the current state of the body work would be ~1k... 2k if i'm being generous... for them to buy the car from you for $17k, put in some work, they can make 3-5k on the car...
so some things for you to consider is, you are in a snow state, the winter is coming... so SUVs are in demand... check autotrader and cars.com for your area and see what cars are asking... if you can push CarMax to $19k, i'd sell the car to them... if they talk about the paintwork and needing to put money into it, i'd go down to $18k as my floor... but their current offer is on the low side... ever consider putting an ad in autotrader and trying to sell the car private party? at the end of the day, its going to depend on how fast you need the cash for the down payment... if you can afford to wait, then you can make some money selling it yourself, if you don't want to deal with tire kickers, sell it to CarMax and move on... either way, you will pay with your time or your wallet...
good luck and keep us posted!!!
BTW - if you sell the car, pull off the tow hitch and sell it to me!!!

I've been in the market for several weeks now, and just found my new GX. I'd say 14k is low. A fair trade is high teens as mentioned. 08's are 23-24K easily on the retail market with that mileage and proper maintenance. I would try to sell privately for a few weeks and see where that takes you. GL

I just picked up an '08 with 59K on it for $24,500 from a Lexus dealer. I can't say Carmax always lowballs because they gave me $6K (vs dealer $4k) for my 1999 LX-470 with 265K on it. That said, with 101K, Carmax has several GX's in the upper 17's but they are '06's I think so maybe not off by that much. I am sure that you can get more for private party sale but I've never sold anything private party that was worth more than a few thousand when I was done with it. Not sure about the hassle.
