Finally got around to finishing the sliders. I used POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating on everything followed by POR-15 OEM Bed Liner on the exposed areas. Very happy with the results (it looks better in person than the pics - the weird halogen lighting was needed to get it bright enough for pics but it makes the texture look less consistent than it is).

Finally, here they are installed:
I had them welded on. Drilling a bunch of holes into the frame is neither easy nor inexpensive--it'd burn up a few expensive bits for sure. Unless you intend to remove them one day, welding is the better option, but you'll still be left with non-factory holes.
I tossed the damaged stock running boards but not before cutting off the front of the plastic part. I'll trim that to cover the bottom of the fender.
There are trim strips with a weatherstripping-type gasket that slide into the body cladding on the doors. They're meant to seal against the stock running boards that are obviously no longer there. As they no longer function I removed them. The grooves where they fit (visible in the last picture) don't look great so I'm thinking about trimming that plastic off.

I agree, though, that welding is probably a stronger, more permanent solution; just not for DIY without a welder.

Oh cool, that's not too bad. I though there were 4 river nuts that needed new holes.

Very OT, but on a related subject - I'm taking sabbatical next year and one of my thoughts/options is taking a tour of all German auto makers (Porsche, Audi, BMW, Mercedes). They're all relatively close to one another and would be interesting. My wife is very un-interested; I may need to wait until my boys are teenagers to accompany me.
