So I started hearing a noise that sounded like a telegraph clicking in randaom intervals. Some days, no sound while others I thought I was an old Western Union Office. Now the sound has progressed into a sound that almost sounds like a small compressor. It sounds at each start up and then at different points during the drive. I have traced it back to this device. It sits to the left of the Air return behind the glovebox. I have two pics to illustrate. It is the black box with a small wiring harness plugges into the top. On the left side there is a cylindrical white piece that is part of this device. Everything in my car works so not sure what this thing does. It looks like a royal pain to get out as one of the bracket screws is down in the back so that screw will be tough to get to without dropping the blower housing. That may require pulling more things like the dash when they replaced the evaprator. So any ideas would be appreciated.

Looks like a stepper motor for the diverter door in the ventilation system. I have the noise as well but have not looked for it. Ironically, I DID fix a ford making the same noise and it was the same kind of part making the noise. It is basically hunting forever trying to find a certain position and making the noise.

I hear mine ticking on start up if the blower is in the recirc position, ie door open, iff I hit the bottom for flow through, door closes and ticking stops. After that, the ticking stops even if AUTO goes back to recirculate.

Yep. Blend door motor. They have contacts inside to report the position of the door, and if they get dirty/corroded the computer tries to re-position the door, resulting in a clicking noise.

Not entirely sure, but it looks like p/n 87106J on this diagram. But might also be 87106H:

maybe blow some canned compressed air around it to blow some dust out of it...mine only clicks for about 10 seconds...maybe that is normal and it always did it. the only reason I can hear it now is the CD player in there died on me and I took it out to retrieve my CD's, never put it back. not sure I am going to replace it...ordered two units from someone on e-bay and the first did not eject the magazine, the second would not load.
