Default 2004 GX470 Rear Seat Entertainment System

First Post...

Hope this post saves ya'll some time and offers some hope to get the GX RSES DVD player running again.

We have a 2004 GX470 (140,000 miles of perfect service!) which was purchased new in May of 2004. It has the factory RSES but we never used it until recently when the grandkids wanted to watch a movie in the car. Everything powered up but the player would not put an image on the screens.

The local Lexus dealer wanted $980 to replace the unit with a refurbished unit.

Salvage dealers simply don't have the part since the RSES option was not widely ordered.

eBay had one for $500 and another for $499. (August of 2014) which I thought was still too pricey. The web auto parts finders were of no help either.

After many hours of searching and dozens of dead ends, I finally found a source to repair or replace the RSES DVD Player in the GX470.

The company is Sune-Technology located in Tainan City, Taiwan ROC.

Initially, my email contact, David Wu, was going to repair my unit, which I had already removed from the rear console. I told him I was reluctant to send him an expensive DVD player without any assurances. Could have been a scam, right?

His response was to sell me a unit at the same price - $180, including DHL shipping.

I did it. The unit arrived in 2 days. I installed it and it works perfectly.

Here's the caveat... The replacement unit sold by Sune is only the mechanical part of the player. You must completely disassemble the player, remove the circuit board from your old mechanical unit, install on the new mechanical unit, reassemble the player and re-install in the car. This is not for the faint of heart as it involves disconnecting-connecting a few very fragile ribbon cables. But if you know a ham radio guy (like me) or someone else with a steady gentle hand, he can probably do it for you.

If ya'll have any questions on this issue, please feel free to ask.

David Wu's business card is attached.

There is also a company called advent that will sell you grain matching leather headrest monitors. Each monitor comes with a built-in DVD player. Remote control and optional game unit as well. They take SD cards and also have A/V outports. I will be wiring mine to my head unit. They are built to order. They come with a three-year warranty. Advent is made by Audiovox. I'm getting a set installed in my vehicle this week.
