No, 4wd is in all of the time.
Speaking of reverse, the side rear mirrors actually point down when you go into reverse. I hadn't noticed this until a few days ago :-)

I don't know where the myth came from that 4x4 don't work in reverse maybe the real old trucks like 20 years and older it does not work in reverse but I do know a few of the older stuff you have to back up several feet to disengage the 4x4, but that stuff is history not even the 4wheel drive Saturns have that ancient system

Hmm, never seen this kind of system. I'm guessing the older style locking wheel hubs only engaged in one direction :-)
Do we all remember a time when we had to get out of the car and turn the locking wheel hubs manually on each tire? Thos were the days :-)
