Default 2003 Lexus GX470 - good time to trade it in?

Hey all!

I am on the fence regarding whether or not to trade my car in and thought maybe someone on the forums would have some useful insight.

I have a 2003 Lexus GX470 that I've had since 2005. It currently has 184,000 miles on it and I've been toying with the idea of trading it in for a 2010+ Lexus RX350. I have thoroughly enjoyed my GX470, but it's getting to the point where it needs another timing belt, water pump, wheel bearings, and the air suspension is starting to act up (service techs looked at it and said I have a bit of time left, but it could need work any day now).

With the potential of a significant amount of costly work, I'm trying to determine if it makes more sense to hold on to it and do the work, or if I should trade it in (I might be able to get around $10,000 for it) for a 2010+ Lexus RX350 for around $30,000. Does anyone have experience or advice with an older model GX470? Was there a point where the amount of work needed became too costly and you decided to trade it in? Do you regret the decision you made?

Thank you for any advice or insight.

You'll probably get better responses from the GX sub forum just because they have ownership experience

KBB.com values your car at around $9k for trade-in, which means that the dealer will offer you about $7k for it.

How about keeping it and getting a newer car that will function differently? Keep the GX for hauling cargo and extra space, and a second car (perhaps a sedan) that will perform daily errands and commuting?

Thanks for the insight. My only concern about keeping my GX and getting a new car is maintaining both, and not having a garage space for our household's third vehicle. I'll post in the GX thread. Thanks again!
