New guy - 05 gx470 - few questions
I know everyone hates newbie questions...lol and I'm sorry but I could not find answers to these questions. So thank you in advance for your help!
1. I just got my GX and of course did not know about the timing belt needing replacement at 90k (I'm at 86) - My plan is ti run it till about 120-130k before replacing because it's a huge chunk of change. Has any one had their belt fail at these mileages?
2. why in the world are there no aftermarket repair manuals??? Can I use a sequoia manual?
3. Would there be any benefit is I change my plugs to Bosh Platinum +4's?
Again thanks guys I really enjoy this site!
Cheers

Could a timing belt go longer than 100K miles, sure, but why risk it. If your belt fails youll be buying a new / used engine. I dont know about you but Id rather spend $800 on having my timing belt replaced NOW than paying $3K plus for a used engine down the road if your belt fails.

Look on eBay. The OEM manuals pop up often for around $150-$200 for all 3...sometimes with the electrical manual included. If you need specific help post it up here. Im sure somebody can send you a PDF file of what you need.
3. Would there be any benefit is I change my plugs to Bosh Platinum +4's?
Not really. Your OEM plugs are good for 120K miles. I just replaced mine at a little over 110K miles w/ new OEM Densos

Congrats on your new GX.

I agree with above on everything but firmly believe 100-110k on the timing belt would be fine. I have spoken to multiple mechanics that say at 90k they have never seen a timing belt that they fely needed replacement. Its more of an insurance thing and Lexus figures 90k is a good starting point.

Do not risk with the Timing Belt. Change it by 100k miles. A good independent shop will not charge you a fortune. Make sure they know Toyota engines.

There are many good paper or CD/digital repair manuals online/Ebay for the Lexus GX or the 4Runner. Get one of them. I bought a repair manual on a CD for $50-60. It's very detailed. If you are planning to work on your car, do not be cheap and get the right tools & books. It will save you lots of $$$ in the long run. Also, for $20 or less, you can find a 4Runner/GX470 Haynes manual. It is pretty basic, but has some great information in it.

I personally never had good experience with Bosch spark plugs. Get Denso or NGK iridium plugs (or at least Platinum). Check online auto parts stores. They have good deals on them.

I have owned 3 lexus's and learned it's not necessary to do timing belt and water pump til 110 or 120 K miles. My mechanics say that most of the time they are in great shape when they're replaced at 90K. Also, shop online for Toyota parts and you'll save a ton. Then take to a trusted independent mechanic.
NGK or Denso is all I'll ever use on any japanese brand.
