Put the transmission in neutral and shift from H to L on the transfer case shifter. There should be a card in a plastic sleeve on your drivers side visor that gives directions if I'm not mistaken.

Can't go wrong the the GX470. Mine is 8 years old with 76,000 and running strong(knock on wood).

Funny how comments of this ilk come most often from those who don't own or have otherwise not sampled KDSS. Much like pre-05 owners saying the engine makes no difference. Any year GX 470 in good condition with the right miles is an awesome machine for the reasons you and responders state. But KDSS is incredible. The sway bar looks like a sewer pipe vs. a straw. It would ruin off road suspension travel if it didn't automatically disconnect. But it does, rendering more articulation then the always-connected smaller sway bars. The extra girth improves on-road handling via reduced cornering body roll. The standard suspension defies the potentially top heavy truck feeling, and handles more like a sedan, but remaining brutally capable off-road. KDSS makes those traits even better. Depending on year, KDSS could have been a specific option, a Sport Package vehicle is always equipped. Look for the in-dash annunciator or a glance beneath for the beefiest sway bar you have ever seen. And yes, the 05 and up versions have a bit more hp and mpg. And the 07 and up NAV is better, but I too subscribe to the theory that a Garmin can offset that concern when all else is equal. Sounds like your goals would be satisfied by any clean GX 470. But the nuances debated here are factual, and it would be a disservice to suggest they are inconsequential.

The GX470 utilizes A-TRAC (Advanced Traction Control System) which controls wheelspin by applying selective braking when traction is lost. Since there is no locking of the front and rear diffs (open differentials) the power form the slipping wheel is transferred to one with traction. With center diff Unlocked you would have a minimum of one wheel with power, with center diff Locked you would have minimum two wheels with power. This system is basis for the DAC(Downhill Assist Control) system that controls braking on steep descents.
