Default Dealer Says My Front CV Boots Need To Be Replaced...

Took my car to Toyota today for an oil change to get ready for my trip to the beach next week and the SA said my front CV boots are leaking and that it would cosr $380 per side to replace! This just sounds high to me.

Truck is an '05 with approx 76k miles. Has anyone else had this done yet? If so what did you pay?

Got a quote from my local Indy shop who installed my suspension on my BMW and they are going to it tomorrow for $540 parts and labor. That's a hell of a lot better than $760.

I can't tell the leaking from the pictures and can't see the crack on the boots either. Maybe just need a clamp on the end of the boot?

How lose are they? The big issue here is if water can get inside.

To be honest I have 1 bad one that I have been riding with for a while and (knock on wood) it has not bit me in the butt.

As far as the price goes I know they can actually be quite a pain to fix and its not an easy Job. That sounds maybe about $100 per side more than I would expect. Thats not the highest difference I have seen from estimate to quote.

Yea I don't know guys, I was wondering the same thing about the location of the crack. Maybe in the folds? I have my indy shop double checking and they are going to call me in the am. Will report back

CS ...to me it looks the boot clamp is missing and that is why the grease is all purged out. It appears to be leaking from both inner CV's right around near the outer strap for the boot. I reckon getting new straps on should be sufficient. At the small clamp? weeping/sweating is very common at this clamp. You can actually undo the Toyota clamps and wrap 2-3 layers of quality electrical tape around the boot and put the clamp back on. This will increase the clamping pressure enough to stop any leak.
You can do the job without having to remove the entire drive shaft by buying split CV boots. Here is what it will look like and the grease tube kit along with the regular clamps. if you are good at tools then you should be able to do this job 2 hours max. Off course a ramp would be good enough or good amount of working space once the front is raised.

Did not know the replacement boots are split. That is good to know. What seals the seam??Do you need a special tool to tightened those clamps?

Mann, dealer says they are the inner boots. Do the inner boots not have clamps? As for the split boots, are they a Toyota part? If so do you happen to know the part number assuming they make them in an inner boot?

Does anyone know if our trucks share the same boots as the 4Runner, Landcruiser or Tundra? Dealer claims our boots are unique to the GX which I also find odd considering they share just about every other part with the aforementioned.

Thanks.

My indy shop called and confirmed they are cracked -- split near the end. The clamps are there just covered in grease. They also said one of my front shocks are leaking! When it rains it pours....

Will hit up Sewell for two front shocks.

Anyone have any thoughts on these affordable replacement parts? I need to do a CV boot in the near future and although I enjoy a challenging DIY I do not think I can do this one. My plan is to buy the parts and go to my trusted local INDY and say "here ya go "

On a separate note, be sure to remember the "inner" and "outer" boots are different. Advance says they are both an exact OEM fit to the GX but don't buy the wrong one!
