the code could come back if all he did was turn it off. I havent gotten under the GX and messed with it's exhaust yet, but does it have cats after the 02 sensors as well as in front like the is350? And how many sets of 02 sensors?
Or is it just a single set of cats pre 02? I'd imagine that if you removed the cats pre02 and have not figured out a way to trick the ecu, that the codes will come back indicating that your cats arent working.....well, because they arent there
There are many ways to trick the ecu, but I dont know what will work for the GX470. Over in is350 world, you can get extenders for the 02 sensors or an actual electronic device the fools the ecu.
Just something to think about.

I think that second canister is a resonator and not a cat, so if you did in fact remove that first cat previous that last 02 sensor, those lights will come back. You would have had to hack up your exhaust manifolds so I doubt you did that. If you dont care about the lights on the dash then dont worry about it. You shouldnt experience any loss in performance as all of the air/fuel ratios are determined by that very first set of 02 sensors. That second set of 02 sensors is really just to determine that the cats are operating correctly.
If what you did is remove that second resonator/cat then you wont have any problems.

The lights had already come on before I removed the cats. The ecu was reset and after a few miles the lights came back on. Now I am looking into putting new cats in. As I live in Angola it's hard and/or expensive to get certain parts. I know someone who is having a look in South Africa where things are normally a lot cheaper. He says he can get me Bosch cats for +- $75 which I find is a great price considering I heard Toyota in Angola charge closer to $2000 each!! Weird...
The main reason I want to put cats back in is because of the smell of exhaust fumes. Although I appreciate the extra performance without the cats, I am not happy with the associated bad smell.
After I put them back in I will also know if the problem was indeed with the old cats of the sensors. I might have those replaced too. I'd like the VSC to work again. A lot of dust/dirt on the roads makes the VSC handy.

That doesnt sound right. Even cheap aftermarket cats are more than $75. Maybe they fell off the back of a truck.
