Just announced, a recall on the GX.
"Side curtain airbags on older Toyota and Lexus models may deploy “shortly after startup” and without warning. The seat belt pre-tensioners may also activate by accident, without an actual accident. Affected vehicles include the 2003–2006 Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX470; 2004–2006 4Runner and GX470; and 2005–2006 Tundra and Sequoia.

"Dealers will replace the airbag control module at a later date. Toyota did not specify how many accidental deployments it has recorded or if there have been any crashes or injuries as a result of the faulty airbag programming. Recall filings were not available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration."

Honda just announced a big one as well. More model-years affected by the Takata airbags.

The bad part is there's a stop-sale order on them, so if you'd planned to trade in your CR-V, Fit, etc. the dealer isn't going to want it as they can't put it up for sale, and the parts aren't available to fix it.

Has anyone had their front airbag replaced yet under the previous recall? I have not, yet.

Got my letter from Lexus the other day.
This is a recall on the side-curtain airbag controller, not the airbags themselves.

Lexus advises owners to let their SUVs idle for 6 seconds after starting to allow the controller time to complete it's initialization, to minimize the chance of an accidental deployment.

There will be another letter sent once parts are available (I guess they can't update the software over the diagnostic connector).

I received the above letter as well ^ . Are there any documented failures on here or online? I feel like I would of heard about this in my research prior its not a new vehicle.

I received this informative letter last week. We will get another recall letter when part is ready. The letter said after starting the car and wait for 5s or 6s to go.

I did a search on the NTHSA website for the 2004 GX470 (note: no space) and under the complaints section there was this:

So at least one person reported deployment.

NHTSA Recall 16V-065

Parts for this recall may be available at your dealer now. I just had it performed when I was there for a routine service.
They will have to remove the center console, so it'd be helpful if you empty it out first.

If you haven't received a letter from Lexus yet, enter your VIN at the Lexus Driver's website so you get registered as an owner.
If you've already paid to have the controller replaced, send your receipt in and Lexus will reimburse you.
