Default Metallic rattling noise when going over a rapid series of bumps

My truck is making a metal on metal rattling noise when going over undulations or the type of vibration when you drive over a rumble strip.

It seems to be coming from underneath the engine area, but not quite sure. The sound is like a kettle lid clanking on the actual kettle when the water's boiling if you can hear what I mean. No noise when just driving. Maybe I loosened something from driving over deep snow?

Any of you figure this out? I just want some examples to hopefully speed up pinpointing the source.

Thanks!

It's the anti rattle pins on the brake caliper/pads. Very noisy. Put your foot lightly on the brake, window down while going over some bumps, see if noise goes away. If it does, I am right.

How do I get rid of the noise or is this normal op? Thx Alan!

There is also a good possibility a sway bar linkage or bushing has worn out...

Could be one of your skid plates, especially if you say the sound seems to be coming from under the engine

Not normal, the clips cost pennies, Your favorite mechanic,a Toyota dealer! ?? There is a picture somewhere on the forum with pics of a brake job if you are inclined to DIY.

The rattle is unmistakable. Annoying when the window is down. But mechanically not an issue.

What's the part # for the anti-rattle spring?

http://lexus.sewellparts.com/oem-cat...X470-2004.html

Look at swells parts list, it's the parts that look liked bent open paper clip, they are like a few bucks each. Must come with the brake kit.

Just in case it's not the brakes (and b/c OP said it was coming from underneath, not necessarily from any particular corner)... check your heat shield... smack dab in center of vehicle. When it goes, it has a very "tin-y" rattle. If for nothing else, this will at least help others when they search for "rattles" in future.

Mine corroded after 106k. At first it was intermittent until all 4 mounting points corroded thru and it dropped down completely.

Good luck

That is why this is such a great site. Everyone has their own opinions regarding what they like and what mods they want to do, but when a problem occurs, everyone pitches in to supply information. I believe that Lexus requires NEW spring clips and plastic shims, with brake pad replacements. The springs get weak over time. Good luck!
