They are great trucks. I have owned my 2005 since new and wouldn't trade it for the new GX460. The only real difference between model years is the VVTI engine offered in the 2005+ years which provides 270 hp. Real world gas mileage is around 10 - 13 mpg city and 19 - 22 mpg's highway.

Here's a link with more info.

I've heard from some people that they're getting around 14-15MPG city, so I think it really depends on what you use the truck for. If you need to load your truck up to travel in the city (like me, except mine's a GX460) then mileage will be a bit lower.

In 2004, they added a TPMS and a rear view camera/bluetooth/voice activation to the nav package. The big change came in 2005, when they bumped the horsepower to 270hp (using the old ratings) and added VVTI. In 2007, they changed the rear view mirror and upgraded the navigation software to a new look. In 2008-2009, they tweaked the exterior look (by changing the tail lights and adding chrome) and interior (new color wood, chrome). In 2010, the 2nd generation GX came out.

I believe it,,, as you said, it all depends on use etc. My trip/mileage computer usually states 14/15 mpg city, but the real world mpg I have found to be on average 2 mpg's less when I calculate the mpg's manually. I have a heavy foot so my city mileage is generally around 11 mpg, while my wife gets around 13/14 mpg. When I tow my boat,,, well,,, that's another story...

The most I got from my GX is 15MPG in the city and 18 on highway. I consider this great MPG. Bluetooth is only available in 2005 and up.

What year GX are you looking at? If you are getting a Tundra, the 5.7L is fast!

You should definitely drive them both back-to-back. They are very different-feeling vehicles one from another. The GX470 feels like a much more refined vehilcle -- has a "quality import" feel, more like a European vehicle for some reason than what I expect from Japan. The Tundra feels much more like a domestic pickup to me. Cost-cutting is very evident in the Tundra, IMO, but that should be expected as you can't cut $15K out of a vehicle an it not be evident. I particularly don't like how the Tundra hood flexes up and down and it just feels kind of cheap compared to a GX470. I like the Tundra and if I were getting a Heavy Duty pickup, it might be the Tundra (or a Ford if I needed a really HD PU), but it isn't quite in the class with the GX470 in terms of refinement and quality feel.

BTW, if I were getting a pickup and didn't need the heavy duty or super-size bed, I'd get a Honda Ridgeline, hands down. That is a much more pleasant vehicle on the road than any of the "big 4" pickups based upon my driving experiences in all of them. I like the Ridgeline a lot.

I am looking for a 2006 GX470. I have driven both. IMO i love the GX470 more. It has a smoother ride compared to the tundra but not sure if its enough trunk space for me.

My gf and I are still considering a 2003 GX if the price is right, but looks at the moment we're going to go for around a 2005 or so 4Runner V6.

How is the 4Runner? is the trunk space bigger than the GX?

We've had our GX for about 4 years. Average over all that time is 17.7 mpg, includes some towing, some off-roading in the mountains, some time with a Thule roof rack & cargo basket, more "local" than highway driving, but very little stop-and-go commuting.

Fabulous vehicle - we have no plans to replace it for years.
