Default Considering 06 GX470

Hi, currently have RX330 and interested in upgrading to an 06 GX470. Is the consensus that a CPO is better than a dealer certified vehicle with a Platinum Extended Warranty? Other than real off road capabilities of the GX over the RX, what makes the GX a better choice in your opinion?

Is $34,900 too high for a 06 GX470 with ML audio, NAV, bluetooth, backup camera, and DVD rear entertainment system and 47,000 miles on it?

Thanks for your inputs!

my 06 GX is a much nicer ride than the RX350 that the dealer uses as loaner.
the GX is quieter, smoother and exudes quality but is also thirstier at the fuel pump

There is no comparison between the GX and the RX. GX is a much more rugged SUV.

I think that $34,900 is VERY high for an 06 with 40+K miles. I prefer to buy directly from an owner than used from a dealer

Thanks for the input. I suspected the price was high. Dealer's playing games. Why would Lexus dealers play games with people buying Lexuses?

With all the bad press about Toyota, you should be able to negotiate a reasonable price for 06 GX. I bought a 2005 with 48K miles for $18,500 from a private seller in NJ in Nov/09. I knew the individual, and maybe I got a price in the low side.

Wow! That's an awesome price. Unlikely to happen here in Northern Virginia since economy is good, low unemployment and few choices of Lexus dealerships. While Toyota is taking a bashing, overall sales of Lexus has been up.

My buy out for '06 GX is 24,500.00 . When I went to the dealer to check if there is any residual capital in the car (mileage is 40K), and the dealer told me no. They appraised the car at 24,800.00 . Now, they are selling exactly the same '06 GX, except for a rear DVD and 48K miles, for 32,500.00, go figure. Don't get ripped off. It doesn't matter that you are dealing with a Lexus. It's all up to the individual dealers. Some are just not as honest as the others.

P.S. I was looking to get a new '10 GX460, just didn't work out.

if a buy out on a 06 is 24,500, the buy out on an 05 (like mine) should be in the low $20s. Therefore, dealing with a private buyer should be in the low $20s. The options also affect the price of the vehicle. My wife's GX does not have Sport Package w/KDSS, or DVD.

Keep looking, and if you are willing to look outside your immediate area you should have more price choices. I see a few GXs in NJ (craigslist + ebay).

Thanks again for your insights. Any info on a CPO warranty vs a Platinum warranty? I thought the CPO was better because if Lexus gives a vehicle a CPO stamp, it must be good. Anyone ever have problems with a CPO?

I purchased a 2007 52,000 miles $35,488. I have looked for the pass 3 months to find an 07 at that price. Most of the 07's were selling for 39,995.
I did buy the CPO with an extended 3yr total 100,000 mile warranty.
We had an RX350. To my wife (since it is her vehicle) there is no comparison between the vehicles, the GX is so smooth, she sits up higher and feels safer driving the heavier vehicle

Beyond the extended warranty, you shouldn't take too much for granted on a CPO vehicle, even Lexus. The "165 point inspection" that they tout is worth exactly squat unless they actually FIND things that need to be fixed and FIX them. A picky car person can easily find things on most CPO cars that obviously indicate that the car was NOT closely inspected by anyone with functioning ears and eyeballs and a decent understanding of cars, or else they intentionally decided to let it slide and see if they could get away with it with their customer. Beyond those kinds of things that almost every shopper will notice, it gets pretty lax from what I've seen at a few dealerships where I've shopped. However, if YOU find something wrong, they'll probably correct it, IME.

Thanks for your insights. I have heard of at least one Lexus CPO buyer later finding out that his CPO'd vehicle had been in an accident. He was certainly pissed about that.

And if the Carfax indicates there's a problem, there probably is. If Carfax says its "clean", it means very little. There are TONS of wrecked or otherwise damaged vehicles out there with perfect Carfax reports.
