Default GX470/460 vs. LR3/4 off-road

Both GX and LR have similar pricings. GX is based on the quite capable 4Runner, and Land Rover is famous for it's off-road ability. I know owners of either vehicles are unlikely to abuse their rides. I'm curious to see which one would outperform the other in an off-road compairson.

LR use to be a great off-road rig.
Unfortunately they are now too unreliable to really take off-road.
They have been consistently in the top ten most unreliable rigs made.

On the other hand you have the GX which is also a Landcruiser Prado to the rest of the world. And consistently in the top ten most reliable.

And if you get a GX with KDSS you are really rocking for on and off-roading!

Well what did you expect from a Lexus forum!

LR best vehicle today has been the Defender Series, than the LR3. Todate they have been unbeatable on the off roading segment, The vehicle is built rugged than the luxurious option given by the Lexus on the GX470 and the LX570.

My take

I have an 04' Lexus GX and had an 04' Range Rover. LR is unbelievible off road but I always wonder if I was going to make it to the end of the trail with out something failing. 75% I did make it and then I drive around LA and something fails. 3 front diff, 2 center diff, 1 trans, 1 engine. All cover under warrenty. I been wheeling my GX for over a year: mud, little rock climbing, hills, 3 nights expeditions across Mojave Preserves in 100 plus degree weather and no problems yet. I was looking at the LR3 before I bought the GX and havn't looked back. If you was to choose between the 2010 Lexus GX and 2010 Land Rover LR4. Go with the LR4. It's a completly different animal. Looks better than the GX too.

Have any GX owners here previously or currently own a LR3?

Before we bought our 08GX, my girl and I had driven several LR3's... Then we began the research and found that the unreliability of the LR models was simply unacceptable. For my money and the possible offloading we would ever do the GX is well more than capable and decidedly much more reliable. Unless you have a "we will repair anything that goes wrong" warrant on a LR then I am of the opinion that the safe bet is the GX.

I wouldn't say unbeatable, the 70 series Landcruiser is just as capable and far more reliable than any LR Defender.

Comparing the Landrover Defender to a GX is like comparing a geo metro to GS450h! Totally different classes!

Been reading up more on LR3 problems. Bad radiator, ride height sensors, air suspension, rotors / pads don't last, cracking dash...damn seems like our GX.

Unfortunately, it's not covered under my extended warranty, and a new dash would cost about $2K. They told me this is a common problem, happening even more regularly in the jags. Hopefully LR will recognize the problem and offer a remedy.
