Default Premature brake pad wear

Hello.

Recently I bought a 2003 GX470. It only had 12,000 miles on it. So now I have 19,000 miles and the brakes started to make some noise.

The previous owner very rarely drove it, hence the 12,000 miles in 6 years. It was stored in a heated garage and only serviced at the Lexus dealer.

I took it to a local garage, who owns it and is very reputable. He said that it needed front and rear pads. If he says that it needs pads, then I believe him. However, how can this SUV need new pads in only 19,000 miles? I don't drive it hard and neither did the previous owner. I could possibly see front pads, but rear pads seem to last much longer.

The short answer is that the GX has garbage brakes.

If you search this forum, you will find plenty of people who have gone through rotors, pads, and even calipers much earlier than what most would consider normal. (Including me - my truck is on it's 3rd set of pads / rotors, and 2nd set of front calipers.)

That does not sound right, unless the previous owner was not being completely honest with you about what he/she used the truck for. Did they use it to tow a boat or utility trailer? If not, I would get a second opinion from Lexus or Toyota, it doesn't cost you anything.

BTW, did your mechanic measure and provide you with the pad thickness?
