off topic Q. How much does it cost to replace driveshaft on 02ES300?
I am having same symptoms as many GXs, car slips when coming to a complete stop...
or is it something totally different?

The GX's slipping when stop is due to the rear drive shaft. The ES is FWD and it doesnt have a rear drive shaft, so it cant be the same.

Does the car jump ahead a bit when you stop? Doesnt this happen before you come to a complete stop or after? I would post this problem in the ES forum also.

It does sound fishy, so they found a code that directs them to a part that's working right, just needs cleaning?

This is the first time that I have ever heard/read of a test drive that requires more than 50 miles. This is also the first time that a dealer would just clean a part instead of replacing it. Either somebody is yanking your chain or you just might have found the only dealership that values service more than earning a profit.

From what I read, car dealership nowadays earn more from their service dept than selling cars. So maybe this tech is really special.

it was their diagnostic specialist that took the car home, one of their main brain guy(SA said...) and they said they don't wanna start throwing parts at it, especially when part itself checked out okay. i am guessing after cleaning won't address the issue, their next step is to replace it. and i am on their loaner since monday and extended warranty company is paying for the repair. i haven't seen the full finished invoice yet but part was about $1700(i'm sure they make their money off parts too) and labor was only 1-1.5hr worth. but i get the feeling they are trying to address this issue, get it done right before they let customer take it. we'll see how it turns out....

I think you're right, sounds like they are on the up-and-up. Inspect it before you take it home and make sure they fill up your tank, which I am sure they will, and they should give your car a nice bath too!

I wouldn't be too worried about it. They would rather you not bring the car back with the same problem. I would walk through the car to make sure there aren't any dents dings etc... though. Good thing you got the extended warranty

This isn't fishy and doesn't need to be reported to Lexus. Do you really think Lexus cares? If you do, you're wrong. I've let them drive my car home before and nothing happened. I can't even remember the problem now. This is my
5th Lexus...

My vote is "no" and I would be shocked if Sewell Lexus in
Dallas ever asked if a mechanic could drive my GX home at night.

That doesnt sound like the same problem as the GX which jerks a sec or 2 after you come to a complete stop. If your ES jerks b 4 you come to a complete stop, then it more likely your transmssion slipping or downshifting.

And so you'd be even more shocked to learned that in a lot of cases, the customer isn't even asked or is aware that their car went home with one the dealership techs. At least in this case, the OP was contacted ahead of time to ask his permission. That's the only part of his story that is shocking to me...
