Default Tire Pressure Monitor Sensors?

I have a set of GX rims from a 2003, before the tire pressure monitor was added. My 04 GX has the tire pressure monitor system. Are the wheel rims the same, so that I could add the pressure monitors to the 03 rims, and have it work ok on my 04 GX? Or, will I just have to get used to the TP warning light?

If the pressure monitors can be added to the 03 rims, can any tire place do this, or will the Lexus dealer need to do something so my 04 GX will recognize the second set of rims?

My intent is to have a set of winter tires mounted on the 03 rims, to make it easy to switch between summer and winter tires.

Thanks for inputs!

Bob

Not sure if Lexus modified the rims from 03 to 04 to make room for the sensor, but your tire shop should be able to anwser that question once they look at the 03 rims. Any tire shop can add the sensor but Lexus has to program them in. I believe there is a 1st and 2nd set TPMS button on the GX.

I thought the tire pressure system monitored the level of the truck?? I know in my Matrix, it has gone off twice when I had a nail and the tire was down below 20 psi.

The GX use a direct TPMS system which monitor tire pressure, not the level. When you say monitor the level of the truck, I think you are talking about the indirect TPMS which Toyota and Lexus use on some cars. It is actually monitoring tire rotation differnce between the 4 wheel thru the ABS and stability system's sensors.
