Default 20,000 Mile Service

I'm beginning to think about the 20K service for my `04 GX470. It's my wife's daily driver and now has just under 18K miles on the odometer. My Service Writer tells me that the 20K service will cost me $258.00, and that it includes oil change, filters, lubrications, fluids, and tire rotation. Even with all of that, it seems to me that it should be about $150.00, tops!

What has been the experience with this service?

Thanks!

Hi Leslie,

I just had 20,000 mile services done for my 05 GX 2 weeks ago. I paid $199 plus tax for the "executive" services (as compared to $159 for standard service).

The dealer replaced the cabin air filter, oil change, lub, top fluids, rotated tires, inspect/adjust parking brake. Also cleaned the car inside and outside for the "executive" part. The only thing this service did not include was the replacement of air filter.

Complete rip-off IMHO!

Most of the things done by the stealership can be done by you. It takes seconds to change out the cabin filter and air filter. Changing the oil in the GX can be a challenge sometimes but I am sure there are other cheaper ways to go about that. Lift up your hood and check your resevoirs for your fluids and make sure they are at the full line. If they aren't, the lid to each tells you what to put in it. Tire rotation would be hard for the novice if you don't have the right equipment but again, can be dealt with by a cheaper route. Think about pricing out this service at a Toyota Dealer instead of Lexus. They can do the same work for a cheaper price.

There are multiple ways to think about this. And I'm NOT trying to defend dealer service pricing.

But you have to ask what is your time worth as well as is the dealer price over priced.

I don't like to throw away good money either. But for me, I trust my dealer, I really, really like my service advisor (he's done me right many times), and the dealership is close and on the way to and from work.

So in the grand scheme, ~$200 for the first year, on a $50,000 car, isn't going to get me all worked up.

Of course, you have to also ask, do you trust your dealer to do it right. My Lexus Dealer is great. But I've had other dealers (GMC, Chrysler) that I wouldn't trust to change a kitty litter box.

Finally, no matter how/where you get it done, IF you have the extended warranty, you should document the work was done, before you forget. Even if you do it yourself.

True time is money...I have more money because I am smart with my time

I did recommend taking the car to a Toyota dealer instead of a Lexus dealer. That should take about the same amount of time. I'd rather spend the $200 extra for mods and taking the wife to dinner and etc. than to give it to some overcharging dealer no matter how nice he or she is. Nice has nothing to do with fiscal responsiblity. Anyway, to each their own. I'll just keep more of mine!

Well, you buy a car to drive it. It you take care of her, it should last you no matter what the odometer says.

If your asking me, yes at times, regardless, it would take me much longer than 2 hours to go aquire the parts (filters, oil, etc.), do the checks, change the oil, and rotate the tires.

Now on the other hand, have I spent 30 minutes sitting in traffic to get to the other side of town to save $10 on something..... well yes
