I have every intention on doing this mod, not really for watching a dvd while driving but in order to start videos for my kids as they are too young to use the remote. I see no reason for the switch though. If you just cut the speed sensor wire and groung the parking brake wire, it will work right? Why the switch?

The switch is for the NAV override. You must have the switch in place. If you run the NAV system without the speed sensor wire, it will not work.

I know you are a smartie and obviously I am not. I have the GX 470 with rear DVD. Can I play DVD's in my glove box that will project on the rear screen?

I am talking about the switch for the DVD, not the Nav.

No switch is needed for that UNLESS you want to be able to put it back into a stock condition. Should you have any problems with the nav system or muti fuction display...the lexus tech will run the diagnostics as seen on our thread, He will see the parking brake and speed signal stuck. He will investigate. He will then void the warranty.

Your choice.

Hey there:

Randy and I agreed that it was a complete waste to put in a switch
for the DVD override. First of all, you have to go through 250 steps to
even get a DVD running in the GX. Load-Close-Close again-
Mode the Radio-Click the hint- navigate through the menus on the DVD
blah blah, blah...
SO WHY THE SWITCH? You don't want to see it push MAP.

Oh , and I thought the rear screen only came on with the remote?
Can you actually activate it from the front? I thought not. I'll have to ask
a 7 year old that engineering question.

If you intend to do BOTH mods, you'll need 2 switches. And BTW,
The Radio Shack one is the only one to use!!!!!!!

The real purpose for the switch is to fool the speed sensor in the NAV system.
And BTW, I have found even while the NAV is in fool mode, you can have the
screen dectivate and grey out for some operations. The trick is to toggle the
switch again, and continue with your operation.

And I want to thank Randy on this Forum, for spending the evening with
me so that we could bring these mods to all of you!! He is really GREAT,
and like myself, is quite solderman (fine tip please - NO ACID CORE!)

(R) - What's in the crib?? Call me!

It was both of our thoughts that 1 switch for the NAV mod was the way to go.
And Forget the DVD switch.

Rob

Are you saying an error will show up on a Tech's diagnostic? Are you sure? What if you ground both ends of the wire? Has anyone considered creating an adapter to plug between the radio and oem plug for easy removal?

If you ground the wire itwill ALWAY show the parking brake on. Dont you think this will be a bit obvious when the tech sees parking brake "on" when he knows its off

These instructions are acurate and starigh forward and perfect. Thank you Randy for such a great explanation and all of yuor time and great pictures too.
Wow...dissed. I seemed to have lost all credit for this post

I certainly didnt mean to step on your toes. If it wasnt for your pics and explaination on how to dissasemble the console, we would all be shooting in the dark!

I guess he meant the info about the NAV override.

Actually, the only reason I did the switch is if, for some reason, you get pulled over you can show that the DVD will not play unless a.) the car is not in motion and b.) the parking brake is on. Yes, I also did it for the kids in the back seat, but you never know when some anal state trooper will try to bust you on something... I wasn't concerned about voiding the warranty for reasons since they cannot invalidate a warranty unless they prove what you did is the reason behind a failure (see the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act).

And yes, beer is the critical ingredient in any procedure involving wire cutters and a 50K vehicle.

Cool

Picked up my '04 GX one week ago today. My friend used your instructions on Saturday for the DVD override on the front screen. 20 minutes later he was done & my wife was watching a movie while we were cruising. Thanks for the post!

Can anyone tell me if this mod will work the same way on a 2002 LandCruiser?

Default Adding a backup cam...

I'd like to be able to adapt this mod to my project of adding an aftermarket backup camera; the only missing piece would be to force it to display the video input you supply.

Obviously each time you backed up you wouldn't want to have to go through the menus in the back seat to tell it to display video... does anyone have an inkling whether given a composite video source there's a way to make the front screen display it?

I wonder if by some fluke pumping it into the video input in the rear console will magically work, but I'm guessing without asking the rear seat entertainment to play it, it won't.
