scratch on leather.

Hi Everyone,

Got a couple of questions. Then again don't I always I have some minor scratches on my leather seats (2). Nothing deep just some surface scratches (gotta love the kids and their book bags) I wanted to know if there is something that you can put a bit of color back to kind of hide the scratch?

Second I noticed that on my gear shifter there are two very small spots that look like the leather has worn off. I mean tiny. Is there a touch up kit for leather? I know for most this would not bother but it does me.

Third. The dash board glass (plastic) looks as though there are some scratches due to someone cleaning the plastic dry. Is there something that can fix this?

For the seats, try shoe polish. For the shifter, if the leather is worn off, there is not much you can do it about it. Try leather conditioner or a new shifter. The gauge lense can be replace, its pretty cheap the last time I check, call your dealer and get a price.

Shoe polish won't last. Ask your dealer if they have someone who can touch up your leather. They do this on used cars before they put them on the lot. It will last and shoe polish is a waste of time...

When I purchased my used GX it a small hole in the rear seat, which I had repaired by a local mobil leather repair (same as the dealer(s) use). At the same time I had him touch up a couple of scatches, both after repair are nearly invisible. In basic terms the coloring on our, and most leather car interiors is a paint like coating. The leather repair people simply clean/prep the spot, mix up some paint, apply it to the spot and apply a clear top coat over that, as the paint is water based and needs to be sealed. One note, I asked him about using conditioners or other types of lotions and his personal feeling is that the coating on the seats surface prevents any type of conditioner from soaking thru and are a waste of money. Can't say if he's right or not.

Thanks G Man, I never thought about shoe polish. I need to get a good leather cleaner and conditioner. I never held on to a truck this long so now I gotta make sure it stays nice. I just ordered RejeX and will be doing this maybe over the weekend. I'm also going to put a coat on the new rims.

Shoe polish is a old leather repair shop trick, try olive oil or leather conditioner for the real minor scratches.

Dont leave the oil or shoe polish in there, wipe it off as soon as you apply it.

Thats what I used on my seats oil. Oil keeps the leather seats from cracking.

He is right, all automotive leather have a clear coat on them. Leather conditioners are useless when the leather is new. It is when the leather is a few years old and start to wrinkle or crack, then you should use leather conditioners to prevent further cracking.
