New GX460 - burnt rubber smell
I took delivery yesterday on 2016 GX Starfire Pearl with Ecru interior, beautiful car overall, saw it come off the truck when I went in to sign the paperwork, it had all of 5 miles on it. The only problem is that after driving home, when I reached and got out, I could smell burnt rubber. My first impression was that this is coming from new tires, or break pads settling in, but then if this is happening then all new cars should have it. Has anyone else had similar experience? As of today it still hadn't gone away completely. I am thinking of taking it in if it persists.

First of all, congrats on your new car :-). When I picked up my GX a year ago, I had the burnt rubber smell as well. I believe it had to do with the pads. A few days later, the smell went away and all is fine now.

This has happened to me with several new cars. I understand that there are coatings and sealants on the new cars that “burn off” so some degree as the car, and especially the exhaust, get hot. It is a transient phenomenon and if it persists past the first few hundred miles I’d take in it to the dealer.

Burnt smell happened on my vehicle. was a sign to me that this vehicle is new lol. burning of the coatings and other items that create this smell. will go away. mine went away in about 3 days. depending on how much you drive

burnt subber smell
What you most likely are smelling is cosmoline. It is a rust inhibitor that is put on many items, especially things that are shipped via ship, where rust from water and salt are very likely to be abundant. If any of you where ever in the military you will find it on any new weapons that are being transported anywhere. It will burn off from power train heat. Weapons are another story...it has to be manually stripped.

Still happening on 2020 models...
I just picked up a brand new GX with 9 miles on it at delivery, and I too smelled a very strong burning rubber smell 5 miles later, on my arrival home. Basically I'm just confirming that the burnt rubber smell is still a thing... and that I have a brand new 2020 GX with 14 miles on it.

It’s normal. Usually new cars are detailed before they give it to the customer. Dealers often coat the whole engine bay with some shiny greasy stuff and that causes the burning smell. It usually covers up once the bay is dirty and the protectant is gone. Ive had that happen on my BMW and other vehicles. Nothing to worry unless it’s smoke smell.
