Our dealership recommends battery replacement every 18 months and does it for us free of charge. I routinely pocket the electronic key, but not in the same pocket as my 'phone. Dropping the electronic key, especially onto hard surfaces or into water is a much more serious risk. Keeping the electronic key in a soft leather case provides some protection against the former, but not the latter.
