Default 2011 GX460 Questions

I am retired and age 70.
I have just 15,000 miles on my 2011 GX460 Premium. Nav and Levinson sound.
My most favorite car I ever owned.
I take short vacation trips.
I do no trailering.
Easy driving too.
I took it in to the dealer for the 10,000 mile service.

At 15,000 miles I got a screen message to get tires rotated and oil change.
Why the oil change?
I called the dealer and they say I need to get the front and rear boxes oil changed.
Cost $600.
I talked to several different AAA mechanics at different garages and they tell me that I do not need to change the front and rear boxes until 30,000 to 50,000 miles if I am not trailering. Engine oil needs changing every 10,000 miles.

Question 1: Do I really need the boxes oil changed now?

Question 2: How do I reset the screen message?

Question 3: Is there any update to the Nav system other than maps?

Question 4: How do I turn off the Nav lockout? I do not take chances while driving but my passenger should be able to operate the Nav system while I am driving.

Question 5: Anything else I should know about my GX460?

Thank you.

The maintenance is described in your GX460 maintenance menu which came with the car!

18 months/15K miles calls for differential oil change (assuming that's what you mean by "boxes" -- what kind of terms is your dealer uses???) in the following cases:

Towing a trailer, using a car-top carrier or heavy vehicle loading:
❏ Replace front differential oil
❏ Replace rear differential oil
❏ Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis

none of these seems applicable to you, maybe you should show this to your dealer ;-)

You can go into the maintenance section on the nav screen and reset what needs to be reset. Oil changes with synthetic oil are once a year, or every 10,000 miles. I received the same message the other day and reset the lights. I only have 14000 miles on mine and I didn't need the oil change or tires rotated and balanced. It must come on every six months...

Go to the owner's manual for the resets (oil reminder comes up every 5K miles) and is not reset using the maintenance schedule on the nav. Again go to the owner's manual.

You will need to replace the diffs gear oil (boxes) and the transfer case gear oil. For the diffs you can use 75-90 synthetic gear oil and the transfer case uses type GLS gear oil.

If you use this in the diffs and you will only have to do this every 100k miles (great stuff). http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc...?code=SVGQT-EA

For the transfer case you will need GLS type gear oil and you will need to change it according to the owner's manual.

You do not need to use the Stealer (way too costly) use a trusted local guy.

I reset mine thought the nav screen. I'm sure there is another way of resetting it. When I took my vehicle to Toyota for the last oil change, they forgot to reset it. I've ordered a 2014 and my oil is good until March, so I'm not worried about it...

BeeJ ... we have a lot in common ... our age, our employment status, our favorite vehicle and our driving stye!

I support most of what you have been advised by other forum members, but strongly suggest you err on the side of over-maintaining rather than under-maintaining. Case in point ... what is the definition of heavy use? Our low-mileage and lightly used GX's may seem to live a pampered life, but too little use is as bad as too much use, especially if they are driven infrequently or for only short distances so that they don't reach full operating temperature. My opinion ... if your maintenance schedule gives you the option, do it rather than defer it, especially while your vehicle is under warranty!

There will be ample opportunity to save money after the warranty expires by having your GX serviced at Toyota or independent service garages, but as long as Lexus is "on the hook" for the first four years it seems we shouldn't give them any excuse to evade their responsibility.
Regards,

SaniDel

Dealer is offering $41,000 private party $43,000 I have the US Wheel exchange factory chrome wheels, paint protection film, SS exhaust tip Nav and Mark Levinson
in perfect condition. I've locked in the price for my trade and should have my 2014 in 60-90 days. I have silver/black now and that's what
I ordered on my 2014 luxury.

Yeah that's it, check Edmunds.com to see what it's worth. $500 over invoice.

My GX had 8,700 miles as of last month's servicing. I'll probably keep mine until the next generation comes out.

I ordered the luxury package, Mark Levinson, SS exhaust tip. 500 over would get you whatever you wanted to order. It's 500 over invoice.
Yes, Luxury is the top model...

in case you havent heard, apparently production is ending in 2016, so there wont be a next generation GX

8700 miles, thats it?
i hope you dont just drive it for 10 minutes at a time. not good for engine and exhuast.
also not good to just let it sit for prolonged periods of time.
